Product Description

Product Description

Michael Ball is more than a Laurence Olivier Award winning and multi-platinum recording artist; he holds the unique status of being Britain’s foremost musical theatre actor. Testimony to his success is the huge cult following he has built…not least among theatre audiences. From his debut in London’s West End, with a superb performance in the original 1985 cast of Les Miserables, to unqualified acclaim in Aspects of Love, Passion, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and more recently in Hairspray and Sweeney Todd. Michael’s silky smooth voice and boyish charms have seduced audiences everywhere, a popularity that has led to more than 15 sought-after solo albums and the hit single ‘Love Changes Everything’. Television and radio have not been slow in courting his talents, from his first flirtation with the small screen and a rather embarrassing appearance in the ITV soap Coronation Street to hosting his own successful chat shows. He even represented Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1992.

About the Author

4.0 out of 5 stars Long overdue biography! 29 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
There are no great revelations in this very welcome and long overdue biography of Michael Ball (although there are one or two hints if you are tuned in). It's basically an account of his career so far, but what a career. You don't realise how much Michael has crammed into his years as a West End star and the list of his appearances and achievements seem endless. All the musicals, the concerts, the recordings and most of the TV appearances are here, told either in Michael's own words (from past interviews) or quotes from newspaper articles or radio and TV interviews.

We do get some insight into his private personality. Despite his abounding cheerful demeanour, he would seem to be rather more of a troubled character than he appears. He certainly seems to have had a tormented adolescence. There is also an account of Michael' apparent nervous breakdown when he was appearing in Les Misérables and how he has now found stability and happiness through his relationship with Cathy McGowan. All the insights are Michael's own words. His fellow actors have not been interviewed here, nor his family or friends (unless they are from previously published quotes). Everything that the writer has said can be found in previous articles, on the internet and in newspaper cuttings.

That's why I've given four stars and not five because, really, there's nothing new here. However, I'm glad I bought it. I enjoyed reading it - it's a nice book, written with great affection for the subject and an account, all in one place, of Michael Ball's amazing career.

I'm a fan - I've seen most of the musicals, the concert tours and have all the records. I thought I'd seen the full display of talent until I recently went to see Michael in Sweeney Todd.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lazy 2 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Whilst it would be interesting to seemingly get a insight into the life of one of my favourite performers, there is really nothing much in this "biography" that one couldn't find by typing his name into a search engine.
This is really a collection of readily available quotes from the subject strung together lazily by the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book 25 Oct 2012
By Sue
I really enjoyed this book. It was a great read and it has lovely photographs. If you love Alfie Boe, John Barrowman and the like, I think you will enjoy this book! Michael's had a more varied life than you think. It's nice to celebrate a star of the musicals!

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuinely nice man with a heavenly voice! 11 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
For those of us who are long time fans of Michael Ball, there wasn't a whole lot of new material in this book. Michael is so accessible to his fans and and yet has brilliantly balanced his fame and career with personal privacy. Once I started reading the book, however, I could not put it down until I had finished it. I'd love for Michael to write his autobiography and tell us more of his own thoughts. I'd encourage anyone to read this book and then check out Michael's body of work, both on stage and on CD. His voice will touch your heart and soul.

I am glad I ordered this book on Amazon as it is a lovely read on a cold, dreary, wet day! as a long term fan I knew most of it allready from various magazine's,newspaper's etc, etc, so NO surprise's!! and most of his fans like me KNOW he is very open about his past on how he has battled with nerves and depression and like us all nobody's life is "plain-sailing" but, if a NEW fan does not know much about him it is a very good read to any newbie! and gives a real insight to his life and work both ON and OFF stage, will wait for the "REAL THING" from Michael himself one day when he feels the time is right for him to tell HIS own story of his truly wonderful life on stage and OFF, it really IS like his song sayes "Love DOES change everything"!!! LOVE THIS BOOK, and THANK-YOU Willie R. for giving us fans at last a book about a true STAR! Jill Clark.
