Product Description

Product Description

In Mice and Mystics players take on the roles of those still loyal to the king – but to escape the clutches of Vanestra, they have been turned into mice! Play as cunning field mice who must race through a castle now twenty times larger than before. The castle would be a dangerous place with Vanestra's minions in control, but now countless other terrors also await heroes who are but the size of figs. Play as nimble Prince Collin and fence your way past your foes, or try Nez Bellows, the burly smith. Confound your foes as the wizened old mouse Maginos, or protect your companions as Tilda, the castle's former healer. Every player will have a vital role in the quest to warn the king, and it will take careful planning to find Vanestra's weakness and defeat her. Mice and Mystics is a cooperative adventure game in which the players work together to save an imperiled kingdom. They will face countless adversaries such as rats, cockroaches, and spiders, and of course the greatest of all horrors: the castle's housecat, Brodie. Mice and Mystics is a boldly innovative game that thrusts players into an ever-changing, interactive environment, and features a rich storyline that the players help create as they play the game. The Cheese System allows players to hoard the crumbs of precious cheese they find on their journey, and use it to bolster their mice with grandiose new abilities and overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. Mice and Mystics will provide any group of friends with an unforgettable adventure they will be talking about for years to come – assuming they can all squeak by... bought it mainly to see how the kids would get on with it. Ages 7 and nearly 5 girl and boy. Early days but signs are good as they really get into the story. my nearly 5 year old's attention can waver (when he's not attacking rats) so maybe a touch too early for him. And make sure you've got the rules straight before they see the game or they'll get annoyed with you.

The game is full of magic! The miniatures are full of character the tiles are massive and well illustrated. The game is a fun and entertaining co-operative game, so members of the family all play together to win.

A wonderful game.

Ignore the 2 star review, he has rated his postage experience not the game!

I was given this as a Christmas gift (being a keen Roleplayer) and since then have played this repeatedly with my wife (not into gaming or roleplay), son (4) and daughter (8). We have all enjoyed being part of the story and the kids like the sense of adventure and rolling of dice.

Whilst on initial inspection this is a run of the mill dungeon hack with mice instead of humans tagged on as a skin, it does have a number of interesting plusses going for it.

...the first of which is that tagged on skin, the mice. Whilst to me this looked like just a rebadging of any of a dozen other Roleplaying games, with characters being essentially still cleric's, barbarians, thieves, magic users etc, it does actually permeate the entire game in an endearing way.

The games also tries to simulate a story and whilst this is only partially successful it does make you seem involved in the plot and key to the events that are unfolding. Some children may not like the, at times, lengthy story text and switch off, however my two loved it.

This is also a cooperative game. There is no Games Master or Dungeon Keeper as there is with other similar games and everyone gets to join in with the adventure. This also means trhat should you choose to you could even play this solo, though much of the fun is with the interactions with other players.

The game itself consists of a number of high quality board pieces that are joined together and form parts of the castle and grounds in which the adventure takes place. Miniatures (unpainted plastic ones) are moved around the tiles which are attractively designed. The story takes place in sections called 'Chapters' and each Chapter is essentially one gaming session as these can take some time to complete.

Mice and Mystics is part story part game, if you're new to the world of modern board gaming then you can't go too wrong with this as an introduction to this style of game.
This is a light(ish) story driven, dungeon crawl style game. Played as a campaign there is enough advancement in your mice to make you care about them game to game, or in this case chapter to chapter. It's the story and theme that really are the star players. You play in a Redwall style world as mice running around the castle battling rats, roaches and spiders, avoiding the cat or the cook and picking up stuff like fish hooks to use a grappling irons or acorns to use as helmets. It is broken down into chapters rather than missions or quests etc keeping the idea that it's a story you're participating in. The artwork is fantastic. The miniatures are the best of any of the games we own, hence the hefty price tag!
We bought this game primarily to have a slightly more involving game to play as a family. Our 5 year old loves the theme and the story, we do too, and there is just enough tactical decision making to keep us interested in it as a game. The rules tell you to play as one or two mice each to work through it but we play as a team controlling all 4 mice, which you have to have in each chapter. It's very family friendly, the mice don't even die when they lose all their hit points, they are captured and you can recapture them quite quickly. Very useful if your kid is really involved in his/her little mousy characters!
If you're expecting or wanting a Dungeon and Dragons/Descent level of complexity, then this might be not quite the right game for you, unless the theme overrides all for you. The mechanics are simple, roll swords to hit, shields to defend etc.

Playing this with my girlfriend and having a great time. Watch the Watch It Played videos that are linked on Plaid Hat Games website (you don't need to watch all of it, just a couple of episodes) and read the rulebook and you're good to go! Well worth the hour or so investment to learn how to play it properly and one player can easily pass their knowledge on to others.

The box feels lovely and weighty but isn't excessively sized for the contents, which are absolutely gorgeous in design. You also get to paint the figures if you want.

Simple mechanics for gaming newcomers, the game suits 2 players just great. Haven't tried it with any other amount but 1-3 should work perfectly well. 4 players would be fine apart from 1 chapter in the (rather long) story book.

You'll get many hours out of this!
