Book Description

31 Oct 2011
The ever optimistic Mr Micawber bids a fond farewell to David Copperfield and takes his family to Australia, confident their lives will change for the better. However, more than florid language and optimism is needed to survive in this brash new world that is Melbourne in 1855. Visits from the bailiffs, rent arrears and his daughter Emma's betrothal to his landlord's son, already complicate poor Micawber's life, but when his son Wilkins introduces a young man with an ambiguous past who also has designs on Emma, it becomes even more tangled. Micawber turns detective, but will the mystery he uncovers threaten even his optimism and integrity?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dickens of a good read 29 Jan 2012
By Anne
Format:Hardcover
I really enjoyed this little book. David Barry captures the spirit of Dickens in his writing and Micawber and his family remain as verbose and impractical as ever, yet very likeable as they start out with muddy boots into their life Down Under. Not a lengthy tome but well-plotted, it would see you happily through a train journey or perhaps as a holiday read. Or even encourage you to look again at "David Copperfield".

5.0 out of 5 stars The best tribute to Charles Dickens 20 Mar 2012
By bee
Format:Hardcover
David Barry has captured the characters that Dickens created perfectly. This is the best tribute that I have encountered to any Charles Dickens novel. If you loved David Copperfield you will want to know what happened to Wilkins Micawber. I only hope that we will find out what happened next.
