I read a short review of Hendricks' novel, and was enthralled to find that it was a modern crime novel written by, and from the perspective of, a woman. Hendricks certainly has the power to shock, and her down-and-dirty, lazy-drawl style of narrative fits the subject matter perfectly, while the facade of the bright and breezy, modern Miami setting serves well to contrast. Also, the bumping and grinding of the dry-cleaning shop where much of the action takes place, as well as its steamy atmosphere, provide an erotic counterfoil to the main story. Try to hide your smile the next time you want into your dry-cleaner's.
