Sometimes what you don’t do is as important as what you do. Brandt Brauer Frick havemade name for themselves producing techno without the technology, using classicalinstruments in preference to synthesizers and computers. It’s a negative that’s had positiveresults. The Berlin trio’s 2010 debut ‘You Make Me Real’ was a forward-thinking gem. They reworked it on ... Read more in Amazon's Brandt Brauer Frick Store

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on 12 Mar. 2013
Format: Audio CD
The Brandt (Daniel) Brauer (Jan) Frick (Paul) Ensemble stole my heart
and several slices of my mind with their 2011 release 'Mr Machine'.
Its clever amalgamation of electronic and acoustic elements in music
which owed as much to techno as it did to the spirit of contemporary
"high art" stirred our knees and toes as much as it captured the interest
of our cranial juices. You could both think about it and dance to it!

'Miami' finds our German cousins broadening their sound palette with the
inclusion of vocals on six of the ten fine compositions in this new collection.
Rhythmic complexity remains the order of the day but their mathematical
bent is also shot through with flashes of almost primal ribaldry (and not
a little humour) amongst the clattering beats and dense chromatic inventions.

Jump straight to track two, 'Ocean Drive (Schamane)', for an immediate taste
of what this terrific collective are capable. There's an almost 70's King
Crimson Larks Tongues In Aspic-like energy in the jagged-but-precise
barmy time signatures which really does set the pulse racing in a wholly
agreeable way! There's magic and mystery too in the grumbling drones and
trudging pace of a number like 'Miami Drift' and more rhythmic mayhem in the
almost tribal batterings of final track 'Miami Titles' but it is in the vocal
tracks where we find some of the richest ideas. Opening number 'Miami Theme',
featuring the singer Erika Januger, is a wonderfully dark sound-drama with
an almost Second Viennese School ambience (Kind-of Berg-meets-Berghain!);
'Broken Pieces' bursts into vivid life around a terrific fractured soul
work-out from Jamie Lidell and Nina Kraviz gets a deliciously spooky turn
on the abrasively discombobulating 'Verwahrlosung' to end the show.

A tantalizing and intelligent confection. Three Hurrahs once again for BBF!

Highly Recommended.

Already 2013 has seen some genre defining albums and this is right up there with the best of them. The orchestral additions lend depth to the tunes an make for a thing of real beauty.
Very highly recommended!

Love these guys 4 Aug. 2013

Highly recommended in vinyl, this cool german trio always puts out amazing sounding records. Imaginative and infectious, with real instruments in a electronic and slightly house-y stew.
A continuation of their excellent work 3 Aug. 2013

hypnotic, different, interesting without being pretentious...excellent.
They are always in that not easy to stay edge between dance and brains.
German techno every which way, most of it very good 12 July 2013
By Frank Camm - Published on Amazon.com

This is hyper precise, chilly, German techno. Often tough; Louis Andriessen comes to mind repeatedly and in a good way. Cropped overtones and resonances make much of this sound electronic, even though it apparently comes from samples of acoustic instruments. Some tracks are instrumental. Vocalists vary across other tracks, offering a variety of mainly avant-garde pop styles that have also been electronically altered. Some settings drift; others are hyper minimalist, others hyper active. For me, the more active, the better, and several roar. Gavin Bryar's spirit is close by in "Miami Drift." Instrumental "Ocean Drive" grows in urgency until it fires on all cylinders. "Broken Pieces" gets downright funky and jazzed in setting and vocal (Jamie Lidell). But Lidell's pleading vocal on "Empty Words" brings little funk to the dead-flat noir machine shop stomp. Syncopation and ever-unpredictable timbres of decorative effects in "Fantasie Mädchen," on the other hand, bring life to the big dance beat. Multiple points of interest and finally a techno CD that approaches my hopes, but is it enough in the end? The more I listen, the more I like.
