Having been a fan of the BR's 4AD material, and after falling in love with 'Dr Strangeluv' on the 23 album - which would be a worthy cover track on Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' masterpiece, I thought I'd venture out and discover their past catalogue. To my pleasant surprise, it is really inspirational and just as inventive. I have listened to '...Damaged Lemons', 'An Expression...' and this album, and all three are clearly pre- the 4AD makeover, and I say this in a positive way.
These albums have a high art aesthetic, and are only suggestive of the muscial influences of the period, leaving enough originality to keep the critical listener's ear challenged and soothed. Sure you can trace the Pixies and Sonic Youth references, but the magical and vulnerable mix of Makino's voice and words over melodic, semi-melodic, and sometimes discordant guitar riffs, makes me wish for more experimentation from the current crop of chart hugging sugary and at times sickly main-streamers... A good band to discover backwards, and then relive!
