Product Description

The Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer emerged as the most popular star of the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon. Ibrahim who is pictured on the cover of that classic album, was the audience favourite from the Wim Wenders' film and he went on to record solo albums produced by Ry Cooder and tour the world to a rapturous reception. Now World Circuit is proud to announce the release of his final album `Mi Sueño' (My Dream) the project he dreamed of realising all his life - an album devoted to the most meltingly romantic of all Cuban styles - the bolero.

Two years ago Ferrer began recording the bolero album he had long dreamed of. `Mi Sueño' is an intimate all-star session arranged by Roberto Fonseca, the remarkable young pianist with whom he had developed a deep musical understanding. Recorded in Havana with a wonderful small group that included Manuel Galbán on guitar and Cachaíto López on bass, the album is a very personal take on the bolero style - deeply traditional and at the same time startlingly modern.

Sadly three weeks before the final recording for the album was due to take place in August 2005, Ibrahim died at the age of seventy-eight. On his deathbed, he dictated a letter asking that his dream album be finished. Fortunately he had left high-quality demos of the songs with which he wished to make up the rest of the album. In the confusion surrounding his death these tapes were temporarily lost, causing a delay in the album's completion. When the tapes were found, they not only completed the album Ibrahim had always dreamed about, but also are a fitting final testament that finds the singer still in heartfelt voice and singing the songs he loved best.

Personnel: Ibrahim Ferrer - (vocals), Roberto Fonseca - (piano), Rubén González - (piano) (3), Omara Portuondo - (vocals) (11), Orlando "Cachaíto" López - (bass), Manuel Galbán - (guitar), Ramses Rodríguez - (drums), Amadito Valdés - (timbales), Emilio del Monte - (bongos, maracas) and others

5.0 out of 5 stars Memorable 21 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I heard Ibrahim Ferrer first in France. The owner of the house I was staying in is a fan. This Cuban find definitely drew me in, so I was glad to find it on It's calming, soulful jazz sung by a probably ageing professional, but no magic is lost in the deliverance. Cuban music at its best. I favour this cd as it is unobtrusive as background, but no one misses it just the same and I'm always asked 'who is that singing?' and 'where did you find that?' I regard it as a gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like Beuna Vista Social Club, but more laid back 14 Feb 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I really love the Buena Vista Social Club CD and though I would give this artist a try.

This CD is much more laid back and more centred around softer love-song themes; good if you want to relax and listen to an amazing Latin American voice!

If I feel in a bit more of an upbeat mood, then I would stick on BVSC instead, but this is still a great CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful 25 April 2007
By Alicia - Published on
Format:Audio CD
I have quite a few of Ibrahim Ferrer's recorded music and found his boleros (slower songs) quite pleasing and emotional. I would pick the boleros he sang out of all the Buena Vista recordings and put them on my MP3 player because I liked the soulful emotion he envoked when he sang. It's hard to describe in words, sometimes an artist interpretation of a song really touches the soul, Ibrahim was one of these unique artists. I was very pleased to see that there is finally a release of just slow songs, about love and relationships, even if you don't understand the Spanish language, I think you will hear his Cuban soul and warmth penetrate your senses. I must say that in his earlier recordings ( from the original Buena Vista recordings) the tone and clarity of his voice was prime. In this CD, one can hear the aging of his voice a bit, but don't let that deter you from adding this CD to your collection, for such a soulfoul voice only comes about once in a decade or two, and Ibrahim's expressive qualities were as eminently apparent in his earlier years as they were in his late years. This is a good selection of songs, some were very popular, such as "Perfidia," and "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas," others less recognizable, but all suitable for both listening and slow dancing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, thank you, thank you... 25 April 2007
By E. Tseng - Published on
Format:Audio CD
I was absolutely crushed when I heard of Ferrer's death back in 2005, and the recent release of Mi Sueno was more than I could have asked for to bring his music back into my life.

I take issue with the previous reviewer who stated that Ibrahim did not have much of a voice (unless having a "voice" nowadays only means how loud someone can sing, which seems to be the case when watching contestants on American Idol). I'm sure it wasn't meant in a negative way--after all, those are words I would use to describe the inimitable Billie Holiday--but there is nothing lacking in his vocal strength or technique. Even in the last years of his life, he could still carry a note so meltingly beautiful and full of emotion without sounding strained. The most wonderful quality about his singing is the brightness of his tone yet the ability to convey bittersweet sadness at the same time. I don't have to understand Spanish to know what the songs are about.

Roberto Fonseca brings a wonderful modern sound to the album, and while I miss the virtuosic Ruben Gonzalez, I'm glad that this was my introduction to another talented Cuban pianist who I will be looking out for in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Cuban Music... 3 July 2007
By S. Vazquez - Published on
Format:Audio CD
Just amazing, I play it over and over! For me it serves as a bridge that brings to reality a cuba that was experienced by a generation that is slowly passing like the Maestro Ibrahim Ferrer. I grew up with this style/era of music in thanks to my grandparents. It allows me to be a part of them and bring to them a little piece of the Cuba they left behind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply, the best. 11 Aug 2007

I ordered 2 copies of Mi Sueno and sent one to my 30 yr. old nephew who recently married. He and his wife called and said they loved it, too. So a 90 yr. old musician can communicate with 30 somethings through music. That restores my faith in human kind.
