Less than a year after the release of her self titled debut album, Buika brings us "Mi Nina Lola", a less upbeat and more sentimental collection of songs. There is indeed a big difference between the two records - "Buika" was much more commercial, blending modern R&B arrangements with Latin influences whereas "Mi Nina Lola" has a very traditional Latin influence. Both styles work for Buika, but I sense that her comfort zone is in the latter choice of arrangements which fit her raspy and powerful vocals like a glove.

"Mi Nina Lola" has a beautiful soothing story telling quality to it whilst "Ojos Verdes" allows for drama and emotion in Buika's sensual vocals. "Te Camelo" and its Flamenco guitar add a sense of nostalgia and intensity to this heartfelt recording but the captivating "Ay De Mi Primavera" with its subtle Jazz influenced rhythm, infectious melody and haunting vocals is the most appealing track on her second album. "A Mi Manera" has a chaotic and complex melody in the verses but a beautiful chorus with soft hypnotising vocal harmonies whilst "Nostalgias" has some breath taking Flamenco guitar arrangements which blend so well with Buika's plaintive vocals. "Triunfo" is a pleasing mid tempo song with a strangely familiar chorus with disturbing vocal harmonies. "Buleria Alegre" is a more creative song with lots of variations in its arrangements and melodies, giving it a very original sound. "Loca" has a catchy rhythm and an easy to follow soothing melody. The final track "Jodida Pero Contenta", also included on her first album, is a successful fusion of Latin Jazz and Samba (but I do prefer the original version as it has more panache).

I bought this CD on the back of a review in "the Week."

It is a fusion of latin and jazz, and she has the most wonderful husky voice. A joy to listen to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Flamenco redefined 16 Nov 2006
By Francisco Rappaport - Published on
Format:Audio CD
I was in Spain and it was late at night. I was scrolling through channels on the television and I came upon a live concert of various flamenco musicians. Enters Concha Buika . . . I was quite unprepared. I was so moved that I couldn't stop talking about it for days. Riviting!! absolutely riviting performance! and it's the first time I've ever used that word. She is probably the most unique and fantastic singer/musician I have ever encountered. Her voice is a natural instrument so fine, so beautiful and rich that it's difficult to believe that she's only human. Many flamenco artists had performed, all great. But, when Concha took the stage her intrinsic beauty alone was so stunning that everyone was immediately captivated. Then she began to sing . . . it was devastatingly beautiful!!! Something so magnificent and pure that she floored the entire audience. When her set was finished there was a brief silence as everyone collected themselves, then a standing round of applause that must have gone on for five minutes. Absolutely remarkable!! She redefines the word rare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insuperable 23 May 2007

Absolutamente recomendable.

4.0 out of 5 stars captivating 13 Mar 2007

i first became exposed to concha buika in 2002 when i heard her singing a fantastic house music dance mix called EVERYDAY and right then i knew this lady had what they call in the biz: "it" . She is one of the most gifted and talented performers i have seen in the last decade. her versatility in singing ballad, flamenco,afro-cuban,house,techno,dance,and other genres is amazing and do them all well.Ipredict her the next up and coming. Americans are slow to impress sometimes, but be patient, talent prevails.THis cd is all geared to the slow primitive jazz flamenco compositions all emotive and spiritual. great cd .

5.0 out of 5 stars CD 4 July 2009

I enjoyed this CD. Even though I don't speak the language of the singer, I could sense what she was talking about by the emotion that came through in the way she sang the words and her body language. The music fit the words, set up the mood of the CD, and added to the story she was telling.
