I have been trying for some time to find a suitable external flash to use with my Fuji S9500 which is a 'bridge' camera without TTL but with a centre pin hot shoe fitting. Looking at various web sites it seemed that I was not alone as quite a few people were searching for the same, or a flash for the newer, current version. It seemed that virtually all flash guns available these days are dedicated to a particular model of DSLR and therefore set up primarily for TTL systems. Even Fuji themselves will not recommend a model but (helpfully?) provide a list of criteria which the sought after flash gun must meet, that is "Capable of setting ISO sensitivity and aperture setting. Capable of metering by itself. Synchro terminal voltage of less than 400 volts. Guide number of at least 24."
I'm delighted to say that the Metz 36 C-2 adequatley meets these criteria and although I am still experimenting with it, so far it is producing perfect results without any problem.
Do read the instruction book slowly and carefully, its English is pretty good, and although it may sound a little confusing at first, it will gradually make sense. Incidentally the book tells you that a synch. cable, for cameras without a hot shoe fitting, is an optional extra. When I opened the battery compartment to put the necessary in, there was a synch. cable, gratis! On my S9500 I set the camera menu to external flash, the flash gun to Auto, set the zoom relector and bounce angle appropriately and so far it works fine. Only time I've come unstuck is if I've bounced the flash too much and the subject has not been illuminated correctly. Readjust the bounce angle and all well.
Nice piece of kit at what I consider to be a resonable price. Need to find a suitable soft bag to keep it in now! Happy to recommend this item to anyone looking to solve the same problem.
