In 1984 Giorgio Moroder, who composed the musical scores to 1980's classic movies Scarface and Top Gun among others, produced a restored version of Fritz Lang's 1927 movie Metropolis complete with a 1980's "contemporary" score that he produced in collaboration with stars such as Bonnie Tyler, Freddie Mercury and Adam Ant.

With incidental music "arranged by Loverboy and the Munich Symphony Orchestra", and using the visuals of Lang's seminal film (which inspired modernist urban planners of the 1960's and Ridley Scott's sets in Bladerunner) as an extended music video, this version of the film is stunning and unique. Sadly, although other restored versions of Metropolis are available on DVD, the Giorgio Moroder version appears to be unobtainable anywhere.

The soundtrack CD features extended versions of all the songs from Moroder's restoration of the film and has a length of approx 42 minutes. As is to be expected, the versions of the songs are slightly different; in the film most were only two minutes long. Most are simply extended a bit and remain true to the film version. Only Pat Benatar's 'Here's My Heart has been significantly changed, losing it's orchestral start and stronger body in favour of a more 1980's disco version that is, in my opinion, inferior to the original. Two of the incidental musical pieces are also included.

This soundtrack CD is a must have for fans of Giorgio Moroder, his other movie soundtracks and especially for fans of his version of Metropolis. Is it as good as a DVD would be? No. Is it as good as the original soundtrack? Not quite. But is it the best recording you of the soundtrack that you can get in the UK? I think so.

I'm one of these guys who wrings his hands over which version of the movie I should watch. For a long time I felt this version was adulterated, but grew to feel that the music that was added was appropriate. Its a great shame that this is not available on DVD.

It was dissappointing to realise that the music on this CD was not exactly what was in the movie. However, the difference is only slight and you would have to be someone that saw the movie a number of times, like me, to notice the difference.

These are nice songs by great artists. My gripe is that the playtime is too short for a CD and bonus tracks should have been added.

Apparently, yes and no.
Other Reviewers have complained that this CD provides inferior recordings to those used on the film Metropolis.
I was unaware of that until now, however I find this is an album of very high quality with atmospheric songs and instrumentals.
It's got energy and some pensiveness, if that's a word.
If it gets remastered, I/m up for a new copy !
