Sick. soooo good! dont normally do reviews but as noone else has....anyway, this EP doesnt sit still, captivates you from the start...so much going on, with sounds ranging from outkast to lauren hill, to some classical 30's style ballards....first track is actually an intro....mad as a squirrel this one....apparently reading a BBC interview she does actually think she is a cyborg from year 2712 or something...good 'cause the next 2 tracks link together to form a massive ear lovin'explosion, the highlight and worth buying just for it....turn the volume and the bass up LOUD it is superb...its outkast alright, but with such a good voice...then later on it changes...slower, ballards reminiscent of just plain good singing from likes lauren hill and even our own Miss Winehouse when she's not completely sideways....actually no comparison, this is janelle monae...also to squash the genre thing...THIS ISNT R&B and if you are a full cross-genre lover of good tunes like me, it wont disappoint....soul, funk, hiphop...whatevers just wish there was more....bring on the album (if I missed something and this is it...opps)

I heard of Janelle first through a friend, and decided to buy the Metropolis album for my brother's birthday. As he lives in New York and likes this style of music I thought it would be appropriate. Obviously had a quick listen myself and thought it was fantastic - the songs are really unique, but catchy as well. I think the best way to describe it is if Outkast decided to write a musical or opera.
I love the 'Blade Runner meets Running Man meets Bugsy Malone' theme behind the album and artwork, and just thought it was a really great album to dance and sing along to, tempered with quite a dark undertone from the storyline. (Briefly, an android falls in love with a human, which is against the rules in Metropolis, so the album follows the story of her persecution by the bounty hunters, hence the subtitle 'Chase Suite'). Despite the story, parts of it are quite comical, such as the introduction that sets out the rules of the game-show style hunt in this futuristic world. I particularly love Sincerely Jane - a seriously cool track with a real slick city feel that evokes images of big band singers, speakeasies, and late night diners. Would highly recommend this album- unless you don't like getting songs stuck in your head for days!

It's such a shame that this EP didn't get more love, it's so good. I bought it digitally the year before this was released officially and I've been loving this project ever since.
Janelle Monae is a talent that should be nurtured within music and especially as she's signed to Bad Boy, they have a tendency to sit on artists they sign in favour of promoting the more successful ones, I hope that does not happen with Janelle. This EP is said to be the first of a series, so I hope the others are surfacing some time soon, if this project is anything to go by, they will no doubt be just as good.
I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates artists who are always willing to do their own thing and Janelle Monae does just that, she does her own thing, never one to be branded like the thousands of other artists out there, Janelle will no doubt be around within music for a very long time.
