3.0 out of 5 stars Jury's still out on this one, 19 May 2009
As my Sky-supplied Thomson digibox went u/s, and I am no longer a Sky subscriber, I decided to switch to Freesat.

To be fair, I've only had the unit for two days but already seem to be experiencing problems, hence the rather neutral three stars. Technical gremlins or just me? More in a bit.

Tuning set-up was a breeze, taking all of about two minutes. You simply enter your post code, and away it goes. First niggle...... I'm in the ITV Meridian region, but the unit tuned into ITV Central West, so I'll probably have to tune it manually to find this channel.

The program listing takes a bit of getting used to. Not so user friendly as on my old Thomson, but it still does the job. It could do with a "page up" and "page down".

Day two was when the 'problems' started. Firstly the box froze in the menu. Wouldn't respond to the remote or the on/off button on the unit. Result was that I had to unplug to reboot it. This does happen, and it became unbearable on my previous box. I hope that it's not going to become a regular occurrence though.

A couple of hours later, it went into standby mode without warning. This was eventually found to be that the default "off" setting was set to two hours. Not a fault, and I reset it to the maximum of eight hours. You need to be aware that the instruction leaflet makes no mention (that I can find) that the unit even has an auto standby mode. It's easy enough to find in the "system setup", but you'll need to do a bit of hunting.

Finally, the menu screen started playing silly devils in that it started performing different actions to those I was asking via the remote.

All in all, it's a nice little box. Compact in size and easy to operate, just let down by a few problems that I don't know whether they are development bugs or a manufacturing defect yet. I'm going to give it a few more days to be fair. Depending on its performance, I'll come back on and uprate or downrate my review.
