Most serious cyclists will have access to some GPS/mobile phone app that logs their ride in all its gory detail. I certainly do - Sports Tracker, it's called - and it does a fine job too. Of course, it's not exactly easy to access while you're riding, so a handlebar-mounted cycle computer is also quite useful. Truth be told though, I've managed without one for a long time, my experience being limited to the cheap and cheerful, free-in-a-packet-of-Frosties sort that works for a few weeks and then falls off.

Now, MetroFlash do some very impressive cycle-lights. Their most recent, the Ignita and Nocturna are two very nice little units that will make you visible from the ISS and, when I used them on my ride to work the other day, prompted a complaint from the Chinese Embassy about unidentified light sources interfering with Jade Rabbit's cameras.

The Velocita is a perfectly functional, basic cyclecomp. Easy to mount (and detach), free of bothersome wires, sturdy and secure, with (almost) all the necessary functions (speed, time, odo, calories burned, trip time, temperature, blah-de-blah). It works. I've tried it. I'm happy on that count. It tells me how fast I'm going, whether I need to speed up to push my average and whether I'm going to be late for tea.

It's just that I have a few niggles. The backlight is surprisingly feeble and simply useless in the dark. The button to switch it on is on the /back/ of the unit and is therefore harder to get to than an nun's bra-catch in a dark cinema.

The Metroflash Velocita is a onboard cycle computer that can provide the rider with all of cycling data needed whilst on the move.

I use a few android cycling apps (and bike mount my phone)that can calculate speed, distance, calories burnt, then map your route out on Google Maps and have never really felt the need for a cycling computer such as this.

I would say this is for the more serious cyclist as the amount of data it gives out is mind boggling!

In the box you will find -

- The computer display unit
- Magnet
- Sensor
- 4 x Nylon Ties
- 4 x Rubber 'O' rings/Ties to attach the display unit
- Mounting bracket
- Instructions

The instructions are complicated in my opinion. It's one of those where its easier to work it out yourself. Nuts!

The display unit attaches easily to your handlebars and receives a signal (wirelessly) from the transmitter which attaches to your bike fork and the magnetic sensor to your spokes. Quite easy really.

How it all works is that you input your wheel size, age and weight and this device then calculates all the numbers for you on the hoof based on the number of wheel turns. The cycling related activities it measures are -

- Maximum/Average/Current speed
- Calories burned
- Trip Distance/Trip Time
- Total Distance
- Temperature

There is a back light activated by a very small button on the back but for me it was a waste of time. I've never seen such a weak back light to be honest.

Once its all set up the computer doesn't come on until you move. It also stops when you do.

For me with pretty bad eyesight for fiddly things like this, it was no good but for someone with good eyesight I would say its fine.

This is the first cycle computer that I have used. It's compact, wireless and performs all the functions listed in its specifications (speed, average speed, calories burnt, time, temperature, distance etc.) very well. I like the method of attaching the computer to the handlebars (basically using large rubber bands) as this is not only a quick and easy method to attach/unattach the unit but it also means that the handlebars do not get marked or oxidised as often happens when using metal clips or nuts and bolts. Setting up each of the various functions is not difficult and can be achieved in a short amount of time.

As another reviewer has said, the backlight is not particularly good but you can read the on-screen data with a little bit of effort. The button to activate the backlight (the same as is used to set functions) is very difficult to find when cycling along, and if you have gloves on don't even try. As mentioned at the start of this review I have not used a cycle computer before so was not quite sure what to expect, I was a little surprised by the component parts that go to make up the "High Precision" system but nevertheless the system works and it works very well.

Finally, I must congratulate the authors of the instruction sheet - I never realised before how much fun it is to gather a group of intelligent people together to try and unravel the meaning of a piece of text. Is it a new form of word puzzle game? I don't know, but if you consider that you are being given this along with the cycle computer you really can't complain about the price tag : )
