Book Description

7 Feb 2005
Art historical theory is a forum of intense, often passionate debate. This book provides a starting point for the art history student to the range of theoretical perspectives used in looking at and analysing art. It covers a broad range of approaches, presenting individual arguments, controversies and divergent perspectives. The book begins by introducing the concept of theory and explains why it is important to the practice of art history. Each of the six chapters that form the core of the book presents a group of related approaches that are then discussed in turn and applied to one or more works of art. The book ends with some practical ideas about writing theory-based art history essays.

4.0 out of 5 stars Methods and Theories of Art History 7 Jun 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a clear, helpful introduction to this subject, and I recommend it to undergraduate students seeking a comprehensive overview of the topic. The author is clearly enthusiastic about her topic, knows it back to front, and communicates the ideas with wit, clarity, and authority.

5.0 out of 5 stars ART HISTORY 29 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
This guide and instructional look into the methods and teachings of art history aimed at undergraduate students, is in my opinion not only excellent value for money (a commodity students in the main have little of) but a clear and concise study book covering most aspects of the subject in hand to it's conclusion "writing the final paper"

5.0 out of 5 stars I'M JUST AN ART LOVER AND PAINTER 29 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
I FOUND THE BOOK VERY USEFUL IF YOU WANT TO GET A CLEAR VIEW OF THE DIFFERENT TRENDS IN THE STUDY OF ART HISTORY. IT CERTAINLY REQUIRES SOME PREVIOUS BACKGROUND BUT IT IS WELL-EXPLAINED WITH GOOD EXAMPLES SET FORTH. THE BOOK SUMMARIZES THE MAIN PHILOSOPHICAL TRENDS OF THE LAST 150 YEARS AND THEIR APPLICATION TO ART HISTORY. AS A REFERENCE BOOK IT ALSO IS QUITE HELPFUL AND EASY TO USE.
