Book Description

31 July 1997 0192627732 978-0192627735 2nd Revised edition
Since its publication in 1987, Methods for the economic evaluation of health care programmes has become the standard textbook in this field world-wide Over the past ten years, the field of economic evaluation in health care has expanded considerably, with a rapid rise in the number of published studies, and wider recognition of their use in health care decision-making. Developments in economic evaluation have also led to the publication of several guidelines for study methodology, most recently those proposed by the United States Public Health Services Panel. The new edition of Methods for the economic evaluation of health care programmes follows the same basic structure as the first edition. The key methodological principles are outlined using a critical appraisal checklist that can be applied to any published study. The methodological features of the basic forms of analysis (cost analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, and cost-benefit analysis) are then explained in more detail. The book has been greatly revised and enlarged, especially with respect to cost-utility and cost- benefit analysis, where major methodological developments have taken place. New to this edition are chapters on collecting and analysing data, and presenting and using economic evaluation results. The new edition will be required reading for anyone commissioning, undertaking, or using economic evaluations in health care, and will be popular with health service professionals, health economists, and health-care decision makers.

Review

Praise for the first edition: "The methodological chapters on cost analysis and cost utility analysis are gems... Should become the standard text on the subject at the intermediate level at which it is aimed."--Medical Decision Making"It leaves nothing important in economic evaluation analysis untouched."--Health Policy and Planning --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This book by Mike Drummond is a new second edition of what became the standard text for Health Economists and can be heartily recommended to anyone who is interested in this vitally important area of research. With the importance of evidence based medicine and evaluation of new pharmaceuticals or medical interventions the text is an essential first resource for clinicians, decision makers, economists and many others. Chapters cover the whole gamut of topics from 'Basic types of Economic Evaluation', through the methodology of measuring costs and benefits in terms of health improvements and quality of life. A useful last chapter acts as an 'economic evaluator's survival guide' and is full of practical tips,
Updated and largely re-written, it acts not only as an introductory text for students, but as a resource for experienced health economists and decision makers. What is more, the book is easy to read and has such relevance it is hard to believe it is primarily an academic text.
Used as a gateway to other work in the area this book will pay copious rewards in terms of time saved in wasteful searching for information. Mike Drummonds enviable expertise is supported by the co-authors Bernie O'Broem. Greg L. Stoddart and George W, Torrance, three people with unimpeachable credentials in scholarly research.

I give you one piece of advice. I bought the paperback version of this book and now I regret it. Buy the hardbook which won't show the signs of the constant use I am sure you will make of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good start 23 Feb 2010
By Samuel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I didn't know that I bought the 1987 edition; I only found out when it arrived in the mail. Hence the 4 stars. Nonetheless it's a good book for those starting out in economic evaluation. Definitely so much has changed in the field since this was first published, but if you need a good, cheap book which will lay out the foundations for the study, this is a great choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Healthcare Programmes 9 April 2008
By Charles I. H. Forsyth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This review is for the first edition, published in 1987 and reprinted seven times. Later editions are enlarged and are more expensive.

The text is an excellent introduction into ways of comparing and assessing the value of health care, and has a great introduction into the reasons for undertaking such exercises.

Arguably, more recent publications will be of greater use, but this edition is a fine first start. Its price is most reasonable too.

C Forsyth
