Biography

A THOUSAND SUNS

We were not making an album.

For months, we'd been destroying and rebuilding our band. The experiments that resulted filled the studio hard drive with diverse, abstract sounds. Amorphous echoes, cacophonous samples, and handmade staccato merged into wandering, elusive melody. Each track felt like a hallucination.

We didn't know if any of those unorthodox ideas could be incorporated… Read more in Amazon's Linkin Park Store

BBC Review

Frustrated? Electronic gadgets don't work. When you hit them they still don't work. You get into stupid arguments with stupid people about stupid things.

That's where Linkin Park come in. The shout "Stay away from me!" on the first track on their new album. You know exactly how they feel. They are angry and insecure and clever and great.

Hybrid Theory was the best rock album of the past three years. It was also the best selling album in the world in 2001. A tightly controlled montage of hooks, riffs, dodgy rapping, roaring, sweet singing, noises and scratching, ruthlessly edited into classic songs. Sixteen year olds going through hormone hell loved it. So did their dads.

It's therefore no surprise that Meteora doesn't live up to its predecessor. The riffs, hooks and shouting are all present and correct. But the first four songs all sound the same and the guitars don't cut through as they should.

But then "Easier To Run" comes along. It's gorgeous: a wonderful sad power ballad, and will surely becomea huge hit single. After that every track gets better. "Faint", built around a driving string sample, is the first song to really break sweat and get your head shaking. "Breaking The Habit" is a paranoid version of Don Henley's "The Boys Of Summer": a very good thing. "Nobody's Listening" is strong, confident rap metal. "Numb" is bitter-sweet and beautiful and ends the album on a high. The best of these songs are powerful, emotional, disciplined and impressive.

I'm not supposed to like this album. I'm 43 not 16. But although it's patchy, there are still moments which move me to tears.

There are two possible explanations. Either I'm emotionally retarded. Or Linkin Park make great music. --Nick Reynolds

This album had 2 stars and as I looked through the reviews I thought it must of been people moaning about Amazon for one reason or another. Then I see people writing things like 'I used to like this but now I like metal so this is terrible' or 'this is a mess of rappy rock' and I know its just that some ignorant people have been reviewing again. If your taste in music has changed that doesn't mean you bash the music you used to like. And of course its gonna be rap rock. You have to be really stupid to listen to Hybrid Theory (Linkin park's first album) and then buy this thinking there won't be any rapping verses. Now that my moan is finished, onto the music.

The album begins with the punchy 'Don't Stay', a truly awesome opener. 'Somewhere I belong' and 'Lying from you' keep up the pace and deliver very well. 'Hit the floor' is a hard hitting track that shows off Chester Bennington's screaming very well. 'Faint' is possibly the best song on the album that puts all of Linkin park into one song: Brilliant songwriting, rapping and screaming set to a pounding backing of instuments and DJing. The album does take a little dive towards rap with 'Figure. 09' and 'Nobody's Listening' but then comes to a worthy end with a dislay of DJ skills in 'Session' and the now famous Linkin Park song 'Numb'

A totally brilliant album being shunned by idiots. Well worthy of five stars

A superb follow up to Hybrid Theory. This album hits all the right spots.

This is the proper "classic" Linkin Park, the good stuff. Not that awful thing that is A thousand Suns.

I was expecting a gold bar straight across the 5 Star ratings for this album, so I was surprised when I read some of the reviews and saw so many 1 and 2 Star reviews - but I guess we are all entitled to our own opinions and values. Can't say I would ever agree with such a low marking .... this band are simply outstanding talents

For the record, this album stands side by side with Hybrid Theory as towering pieces of rock work. Linkin Park spearheaded a totally new genre of rock .... few bands in history can genuinely say that about themselves. Every band member plays his part but without the rasping, shell-shock power of Chester Bennington on vocals and the creative wizardry of Mike Shinoda who is the glue that pulls this bunch of guys together, LP could I confess be just an ordinary bunch of American guys having some fun in their parents garage. Truth is, Bennington and Shinoda drive this band and their blend of rap and metal works in a way that you wouldn't expect. Somewhere I Belong, Lying From You, Numb, Don't Stay, Breaking The Habit and Easier To Run are six towering tracks and the rest are strong in their own right ... how many albums these days give you such a host of truly awesome tracks in one album.

My 15yr old daughter got me into this band and I love them. I still regret missing them on the UK leg of their Minutes To Midnight tour - a mistake I won't repeat when they visit these shores again.
