Product Description

Review

"Volk gives us new ways of thinking about and looking at the world. Intriguingly illustrated with computer and hand drawings, collages and photographs, his lyrical meditation will appeal to scientists, New Age types, interdisciplinary thinkers and the intellectually adventurous." -- "Publishers Weekly" --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

In the interdisciplinary tradition of Buckminster Fuller's work, Gregory Bateson's Mind and Nature, and Fritjof Capra's Tao of Physics, Metapatterns embraces both nature and culture, seeking out the grand-scale patterns that help explain the functioning of our universe. Metapatterns begins with the archetypal patterns of space, both form building and relational. Tyler Volk then turns to the arrows, breaks, and cycles that infuse the workings of time. With artful dexterity, he brings together many layers of comprehension, drawing on an astounding range of material from art, architecture, philosophy, mythology, biology, geometry, and the atmospheric and oceanographic sciences. Richly illustrating his metapatterns with a series of sophisticated collages prepared for this book, Volk offers an exciting new look at science and the imagination. As playful and intuitive as it is logical and explanatory, Metapatterns offers an enlightening view of the functional, universal form in space, processes in time, and concepts in mind.

Volk is a case of a PhD who may be intelligent yet lacks the ability to write effectively. I learned very little from this book, and when one does come upon some intriguing information his writing style and thought sequences are so convoluted that the entire text is rendered useless. I couldn't even finish the last chapter due to sheer boredom...

Volk's book is a groundbreaking exploration of the world of patterns. By taking the reader through a myriad of examples Volk demonstrates the universality of basic patterns (metapatterns) in both the physical and cultural realms of existence. By showing the interconnectedness of consciousness, metaphysics, and epistemology, Volk has opened the door for a new holistic approach to science. Metapatterns has implications for the study of consciousness, chaos and complexity theory, the philosophy of science, and the sociology of knowledge. In the years to come, Metapatterns will be considered one of the books which paved the way for the science of the 21st century.

Tyler Volk has set himself the task of exploring the universal, invariant relationships between number, form, and function at all levels of existence, cosmic, systemic, planetary, biological, and cultural. Using such simple concepts as Spheres, Arrows, Surfaces, Lines, Cycles, etc. he examines the commonalities that exist across all scales of measurement. Volk's prose is fluid, poetical, and highly imaginative while remaining true to the corpus of scientific knowledge. An inspiration to cross-disciplinary thinkers everywhere!
