5.0 out of 5 stars Mesmerisingly Metamorphic 7 Jan 2009
It is little wonder that it has taken a dozen years for a review to be written on this site for this book because it is a very difficult book to grade, define and evaluate. It is the third in a series of 'Ultimate' books by Mike Wilks. The other two had massive prizes of 10000 for the winners and were the famous Alphabet and Noah's Ark books. No prizes then for this book and no sign of the trademark snail in each painting. However, there are 12 more of the artist's detailed, surreal and dreamlike paintings, all sub-layered with an unsettling undertone. Unlike his previous two books, I would not recommend this book for children under 12.
Ironically, he is currently engaged on the Mirrorscape trilogy for children which involves paintings coming to life and promises to be a most exciting and well-illustrated concept.
This book is described as being "...art, a puzzle, a life story and two realities for the price of one". Apart from the paintings, there are 13 texts and the aim is to spot the differences as each text and painting has an almost exact copy on the facing page. The paintings have been inspired by some of the events in the artist's life and it would appear that he has had a strange, possibly disturbed, existence if the artwork is anything to go by. The book is broadly autobiographical and embedded within it is the grand theme of the cycle of life. It comments pictorially on mankind's life passages and evolution and the texts have been selected to complement this mediative journey.
In a most interesting journey the author regales us with a paradox: "The only unchanging thing in the universe is change itself". He urges us to spot the differences and consoles us with the information that there are never more than 75 differences between the textual pages and never more than 250 differences between the imageable pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling and intricately detailed artworks are a feast for t 5 Jun 1998

Mike Wilks previous books include The Ultimate Alphabet, which I have not had the pleasure of viewing. He is a writer/artist, although a better artist. His new book that I discovered by chance, intrigued me right away. I am the type of person who enjoys children's puzzlebooks and mythology books, especially if they are illustrated by stylistic and talented artists. The dazzling and intricately detailed artworks are a feast for the eye. And comparing the alternating pictures to find a myriad of differences was actually quite stimulating, especially on my break at work. I can't read in the staff-room because there is too much noise. But I found this book to be a perfect coffee-break companion. His artwork is magical, mystical and thought provoking. The changes in the artwork are missing objects, subtle colour changes, moving objects, changing shapes, reflections, and many others.
I delighted in the chance to use my perception and reading in ways that I never had before. Mike Wilks is truly a genius, and I can't wait to go through the art stores looking for some of his work. I would love to acquire an original!
5.0 out of 5 stars How could I have missed that one!!! 23 Mar 2010

As a lover of puzzles of every description;I must admit,Spot-The Difference Puzzles, are one of my favorite kinds.
I have several books of these puzzles;but, this is one of the best I've ever come across.
On first glance, this book might appear to be a juvenile book;but don't be fooled. It is a large Hard Cover book,9 X 12 inches, and only 66 pages. It has high quality paper, printing amd excellent color illustrations and artwork.
The big difference from any other Spot-The- Difference books available;is that these challenges are presented in two different forms.First,we get the traditional approach with two seemingly identical pictures with "hidden" differences to find. The other ,real different form, is what seems to be two identical pages of text with small illustrations ,where the challenge is to find the differences in both the text and the illustrations.
Along with these two forms of challenges;the high quality and intricate and imaginative artwork;is a whole lever higher than we are used to seeing with these types of puzzles. The differences include every approah I have been familiar with, and even many that are new and different. Some are simple and obvious while others are much more subtle, slight, intricate, shrewd, discriminating, crafty, foxy, artful, tricky, insidious, deceptive, imaginative, and so forth;that you are never sure whether or not you have found them all. This book will provide endless hours of entertainment for people of any age.Even someone who has never tried these types of puzzles will be immediately enthralled ;once they pick up this book and search for differences in the text and pictures.
There are several suggestions as to how to keep track of the differences you or others have found without marring the book itself. One of the other reviewers was critical of the book because there was no listing given to all the differences, which,by the way,is normal with these puzzles.Well, maybe that is a third difference with this book, and a reason to call it "The Ultimate";because that means you can ever put the book aside and think that you have "spotted" all the differences. As much as you think that you have found them all, you'll return to it over and over again, and find more that you overlooked.
