Metal thread embroidery (or gold work) is an exciting and challenging technique. From prehistoric origins in the East, the skills travelled slowly west, reaching a peak in England with the great medieval period of embroidery, when the highly-regarded "English work" was in demand all over Europe. Today, metal thread is still used for ecclesiastical and ceremonial items but contemporary embroiderers also use it in more experimental ways. This updated classic text, aimed at embroiderers of all skill levels, assembles a wide range of information on metal thread embroidery. With an A-Z arrangement, it divides into four main sections. The author first considers articles on which metal thread can be found, such as ecclesiastical textiles, secular garments and military and heraldic articles. A section is then devoted to tools, giving full details of specialist requirements for metal thread embroidery. Next, materials are covered, including wires, silks, velvets and other fabrics. Finally, techniques are explained with the help of photographs and clear diagrams, and with reference to period styles and design terms.

About the Author
Jane Lemon worked in theatre, and then for eight years as a costume designer for television. She is a member of the Practical Study Group of the Embroiderers' Guild, an experienced teacher and lecturer on embroidery and a founder member of the Sarum Group, formed in 1978 to design and work ecclesiastical embroidery. Their work for Salisbury Cathedral is particularly well known.

I came across this book in a well known book chain when I first got involved in the subject of metal thread embroidery. It was very much an impulse purchase after a brief flick through of the pages, but the decision to purchase was one I have thanked every day when I've needed to look something up, or even gain a little inspiration for my next project.
The book is full of stunningly clear pictures of examples of goldwork. As a reference book on the different styles, stitches and mediums used in the technique it is superb. Simple to understand it doesn't overly dress anything up and is the kind of text book I wish existed in all areas of embroidery. So much so that my two friends who have joined me in my hobby have both bought their own copies.
I wouldn't call it a good beginners book to learn from, but I'd happily recommend it to anyone with a growing interest in the technique.

This book is very good for the beginner or experienced embroider. I found it enjoyable not only to look at, read but very imformative on the style of stitch and how to perform that stitch. A must for any serious embroider's library.
