Book Description

26 Nov 2009
In a torrential downpour, former FOXHOUND agent Solid Snake stands on the George Washington Bridge - ready to launch himself to the deck of the U.S.S. Discovery as it passes below. Inside Discovery is a new generation of Metal Gear. But in the next hour, Snake's world explodes. Two years later, a young, unproven agent codenamed Raiden must penetrate the mystery of what went so insanely wrong that night. In a labyrinthine superstructure in New York harbour known as the Big Shell, enemies, allies, secret agents, and double dealers converge. Russian commandos, a cyber Vamp, a long-legged, leather-clad, rifle-bearing beauty named Fortune, a deformed, finely manicured bomber called Fatman, and a mysterious Mister X. Somewhere in the maze, as well, is the President himself - his biometrics coded to a bomb that can take out Manhattan, his loyalties unknown. Now, the rookie Raiden is fighting his way to one discovery after another, including the rebirth of Solid Snake himself and a nightmare organization with a history, a plan, and a terrifying superweapon hidden in plain sight.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read 7 Jan 2013
Format:Paperback
The book is accurate to the storyline of the game and the characters have been presented well. However there are moments where the descriptions of places or characters are a little vague. This could be a problem for people who are reading the book and have not played the game. People who have played the game will probably not notice this too much as the images from the game fill their mind and wont rely too much on descriptions (this is what i found being a strong fan of the MGS series). despite the complexity of the story it has been written and explained well and is easy to understand ( *SPOILER ALERT* it made alot of things much more clear, things that i didnt fully understand while playing the game such as parts about the patriots and the colonel AI etc.).

All in all a well written book that does the game credit. The fans of the game will enjoy the book, and people who havent played the game will still enjoy it as it is full of action and has a fantastic plot with interesting characters. any fan of spy or espionage books will not regret buying this book as long as being fully realistic is not a problem to the reader as there are some sci-fi elemants to the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun game tie in 29 Nov 2009
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Fans of the popular computer game are already more than familiar with the story arc of this offering and will buy and enjoy it just as much as they did on their initial play through. Its well written with the author picking up on the excitement as well as the close cut breath holding moments that made the game a hit.

But perhaps more importantly for those who've yet to meet old Solid Snake, its their chance to get to know one of the modern iconic hero's and perhaps go rushing out in order to reenact the missions to which they've read. Great fun and above all one of the best game to book novels out there.

1.0 out of 5 stars Drivel... 5 May 2010
Format:Paperback
The last review read like a promotion. This book is terrible. Now, don't get me wrong, nothing against Mr. Benson, but his work here is definitely nothing to be proud of. Even the description of the book had me chuckling. Those of us who are familiar with his previous book for the original "Metal Gear Solid", are well aware of what sort of grammar, dialogue and prose awaited us. How foolish of me, you may say, to be fooled twice into buying this book. Hah! I thankfully only rented this one from the library. Anyone who is a fan of Metal Gear will tell you there is something fatally wrong with the original novel, which Benson was writing with Kojima's supervision. The writing just does not flow, at all. It's all over the place; Benson practically re-writes most of the characters to say or do things that they either never did in the original game, or is so completely out of character, that just beggars belief! New scenarios are created that are either pointless, or simply annoying and bog down the story even further into complete convolution. These problems resurface once more in this novelisation, I am sad to say.

Unfortunately, the dialogue, just as in the original game's novel, is once again, unintentionally hilarious. It essentially reads like bad fan-fiction. The structure, the planning, and various other processes that Mr. Benson should have gone through when preparing to write this novel, obviously never happened. Why else would so many plot points be created by him, only for them to be forgotten about later on into the novel? You can sort of tell he rushed to get this project "done", just so he could pick up the pay cheque and be done with it. He even paints Raiden as "David Bowie with a shoulder-caressing mane of hair" or something similar. It's just horrific.
