Hi there, my name is M4L and I was a teenage Annihilatorolic. It's true, even my metal karaoke track was 'Snake In The Grass'. But it's nearly twenty years since "Alice In Hell" came out and we parted shortly after "King Of The Hill" came out. It was just one of those things. We were young, we were looking for different things, we needed to try and find out who we were in the mad old world of metal. And so we moved on with our lives, older and sadder.
But then word started to filter through about the new Annihilator album, to be called "Metal". Can't argue with that. Even through the long journey of Jeff Waters, Annihilator always had a large degree of thrash metal driving things along. There were to be 10 tracks. Which makes it a proper album. Lips from Anvil would be on it. Hold the fort! Damn the torpedoes! Batten down the hatches! Another meaningless exclamation! This could be interesting.
Sure, then they had to go and ruin it, bringing in a special guest for every track. So you get, deep breath. Jeff Loomis (Nevermore), Danko Jones, Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy), Alex Laiho (Children Of Bodom), Anders Bjorler (The Haunted), Michael Amott (Arch Enemy), Jesper Stronblad (In Flames), Corey Beaulieu (Trivium), Jacob Lynam and Willie Adler (Lamb Of God). And Lips from Anvil! Now as you know, all star albums suck. But this one doesn't. In fact, it's the best Annihilator album since, ooh, "Set The World On Fire". But, why oh why, doesn't Anders Bjorler appear on 'Haunted' instead of 'Smother'?
You see, it does exactly what it says on the tin. Metal. Which is what we want. Strangely, the guests don't overshadow some excellent songs, and the whole thing does feel like a proper band, with them incorporating their sound into the song, instead of beating it over the head shouting "me, me, me, I'm in a Metallica tribute band, me, me, me". There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't buy this album. Best of the best include 'Clown Parade' with Jeff Loomis, 'Operation Annihilation' where Jeff does a vocal turn to show us that on 'Stars In Your Eyes' he is James Hetfieldugh and, of course. the battle cry of metal greats, 'Army Of One', which not only manages to rhyme Megadeth with Black Sabbath, but features Lips! From! Anvil!
A storming release you really need to hear. They're doing a European tour opening for Trivium soon, so get down early. Even if that sounds wrong in my head. So let's call it Trivium closing for Annihilator and be done!
