Product Description

It’s been ten years since Connor Connolly lost his parents in ‘The Battle’; a fight between The Governor and Jones, two of the world’s strongest metas. Before ‘The Battle’ the world had been full of metas, super-powered humans whose amazing abilities came from mysterious wristbands. Since that day one has never been seen again.

Now 16 years old, Connor lives in Bay View City with his older brother Derrick, a meta-obsessed blogger, where he’s just trying to keep his head down long enough to survive high school. All of that changes the night he attempts to save a girl's life and wakes up to find the first new pair of metabands anyone has seen wrapped around his wrists.

Connor soon finds an unlikely ally in Midnight, a masked vigilante who helps him learn how to harness his new abilities, while also trying to balance his summer job at the lake. As a meta, Connor becomes known as Omni, potentially the most powerful meta the world has ever seen, but it isn’t long before he finds out he's no longer alone...

5.0 out of 5 stars An alliteration addict approves... 4 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Meta is a novel about Connor Connolly coming to terms with his life altering after becoming the first known bearer of metabands in a decade. The bands grant the owner, and only it's owner, super powers that can vary between each metahuman. Unfortunately, the bands don't come with an instruction manual so it is up to Connor to learn exactly what he is capable of as a metahuman.

The novel is told in the first person and Connor is instantly likeable in this role with his tragic past, his awkward encounters with his crush, Sarah, and his relationship with his mysterious mentor, Midnight.

There are plenty of action scenes as the story unfolds and builds up to the final encounter. Along the way however there are also some funny moments as Connor discovers his powers and tries to keep up his normal life working at the lake.

Fans of the podcasts that Tom co-hosts with his good friend Tim will also recognise a few references with one in particular towards the end that caused me to laugh out loud on my morning commute. It was worth the awkward glances I received!

Overall I would recommend this as being well worthy of a read as it was fast paced, entertaining, amusing and with some interesting characters for whom there is still a lot of mystery to be solved, perhaps in a future novel..

4.0 out of 5 stars This was pretty good. 16 Nov 2013

This is not the sort of book I would usually read but I thought I would give it a go and really enjoyed it.
It's a book about super heroes for young adults but isn't overly geeky and not patronising either.
A nice easy, enjoyable story that keeps you interested and wanting to find out more afterward.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging read 24 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a very engaging read. While it lacks the description that I'm used to in books (for example, where a Jack Reacher novel would spend half a page describing a villain, this book will use a single line), it's still a very engaging read and it allows you to use your imagination more (so it's important that you have one!). This is the first 'superhero book' that I've read (I usually stick to Fantasy), so apologies if this is the norm for this genre.

The book is funny, witty and very easy to read. It's one downside is that it is far too short - that isn't to say there isn't a lot happening, but as I said earlier there isn't a lot of description and the main character does seem to go from decision to decision fairly quickly; it's really up to you to fill in the gaps.

All in all, I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the genre and has a great imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great first book 8 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I bought this book because I am a fan of 'the complete guide to everything' and wanted to support tom,
but after reading the first chapter or two I was completely hooked. Its a very exiting story with twists
and turns and the characters have a lot of depth; you are really routing for them. I really hope there
is a sequel to find out what happens next! The tip of the hat to long time listeners at the end is hilarious.

The first thing that stuck me about Meta is just how easy a read it truly is. The short chapters and constantly developing storyline make it extremely difficult to put the book down. Many a time I have thought: "right, one more chapter" and I've ended up reading for another half an hour.

The story begins with an immediately likeable and genuine character, Connor, and quickly 'sets the scene' for the novel. The story is very humorous and entertaining, and those who follow the podcast 'The Complete Guide to Everything' will quickly begin to notice Tom's wit and humour within the text.

The novel deeply emerges the reader into the struggle of Connor's newly grained superpowers and the consequences this places upon his moral and social judgement. Tom has created an extremely real character that satisfies the reader whilst challenging their moral compass. The closing scenes of the novel provide a good base for further exploration of the Meta world and the characters within it during a next novel. I definitely hope this is the case.

Ultimately, it is a fantastic, easy read, that will provide many laughs and just basically put you in a good mood. If you follow Tim and Tom's podcast, it is an absolute necessity you read this book, its awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb literary debut 2 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback
Thanks to the success of the Twilight series the young adult market has become saturated by authors trying to cash in, and as a result for a book to stand out it really has to be a cut above the competition. Tom Reynolds should have no fears on that front; 'Meta' is as assured a first effort as you're likely to come across. Great characters and strong plotting are combined with his obvious affinity for the superhero genre, and it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if Hollywood studios were already contacting him regarding the rights to a big screen adaptation.
