Product Description

Product Description

' "Spirituality" may be possible for a single, old, financially stable contemplative who has nothing to do but pray,' says Mike Yaconelli, 'But for people like you and me, with kids and mortgages and jobs and car payments, probably not.'

There are many obstacles to the kind of spirituality we feel we ought to have: not enough time, feelings of inadequacy, lethargy, over-expectation, fear ... But we will be surprised to discover that true, Godly spirituality is not quite as inaccessible as we once thought.

Mike Yaconelli writes from the heart, with humour and humanity, and bears favourable comparison with Philip Yancey and Richard Foster. Messy Spirituality is his first major book to be actively marketed in the UK.

From the Back Cover

"I Guess I’m Not a Very Good Christian . . ."

Do you feel like:
I don’t pray enough
I don’t read my Bible enough
I don’t share my faith enough
I don’t love God enough
I’m not committed enough
I’m not spiritual enough

Then this book is for you. Messy Spiritualtiy was written for the silent majority of us who have been convinced that we just don’t do Christianity right. We spend most of our lives worried about what we don’t do instead of what we have done, focused on our imperfections instead of God’s fondness for the imperfect. Why? Because we’ve been bombarded with books, tapes, talks, seminars, and movies convincing us that real Christianity is all about perfection.

Michael Yaconelli dares to suggest that imperfection, unfinishedness, and messiness are, in fact, the earmarks of true Christianity; that real Christianity is messy, erratic, lopsided . . . and gloriously liberating.

What if genuine faith begins with admitting we will never have our act completely together? Maybe messy disciples are exactly the kind of imperfect people Jesus came to earth for and whose company he actually enjoyed--and still enjoys. If you want to find Jesus today, look for him in the midst of burned-out believers, moral misfits, religious incompetents . . . men and women whose lives are, well, messy.

Messy Spirituality is a strong antidote for the spiritual perfectionism in us all. Here are truths that can cut you loose from the tyranny of ought-to’s and open your eyes to the deep spirituality of being loved, shortcomings and all, by the God who meets you and transforms you in the midst of a messy and unpredictable life. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The loss of Mike Yaconelli in October 2004 was huge. Not only was he an inspirational speaker, his books are astounding. Every time I read one of them I feel not only closer to the author but closer to God.

His attitude to Christianity is what the organised Church really needs to take on board. This book is essential reading for all sorts of people, from committed Christians needing a spiritual uplift to those on the fringe thinking that to be loved by God we need to be living perfect lives. It just ain't so!!

Buy this book for yourself, for your best friend, for the person you work with who thinks you're a bit batty going to church every week. Spread the word that you don't have to be perfect to be a Christian, there was only one bloke capable of that...and sorry Mike it wasn't you my love, but God bless you, I miss you!

A refreshing read 4 Jan 2007

This book was a breath of fresh air. It was very readable - a good combination of stories, personal bits and Bible references.

It reminded me of God's amazing grace and what it means to live with that in your life. How we don't have to be good enough for God, he loves us as we are. Not that we have licence to abuse God's grace but we don't have to impress him!

Such a relief. Inspirational.

Wow, one of those books that has you nodding at every page. Mike Yaconelli had a knack of telling as it is, and this book is brilliant.

He helps you understand God's grace and what it means for the Christian life and church. Essentially it's about realising that our best spiritual connections with God happen when we are at out most honest, most real, most passionate.

Christian spirituality is not about competence or professional church or fake Christian lives on Sundays or comfortable or ...

Christian spirituality is messy spirituality. It is about a passion for Jesus, just as you are. Jesus cared far more about passion than competence.

Churches really need to grasp what Yaconelli is saying as it's at the heart of Jesus' gospel. Read this book, change yourself, change church, meet Jesus in today's world.
