5.0 out of 5 stars CRUCIAL PHASE OF BATTLE OF YPRES 12 Oct 2012
By P. A. Panozzo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a terrific volume in the Battleground Europe series dedicated to the phase of the Battle of Ypres as it impacted the strategically crucial high ground of Messines Ridge. It was "the first great set-piece action of British arms that resulted in complete victory - a victory in the air, underground, in artillery, logistics and on the ground with the infantry" to quote series editor Nigel Cave. The British, literally blew up the Messines Ridge and it's German defenders with no less than 19 mines (tunnels under the front packed with explosives!). The explosion was heard as far away as London! Arthur Gould Lee, an RFC pilot at the battle, has stated in his fabulous book "No Parachute" No Parachute: A Fighter Pilot in World War I (Wings of war) "I've never heard such a stupendous noise before, like the thunderclap of doom." He was about a dozen miles away at his aerodrome La Gorgue. From his book, I developed an interest in the Battle of Messines.Messines 1917: The zenith of siege warfare (Campaign). I will probably never visit this battlefield but this guidebook satisfied my curiosity about the battles for the Messines ridge. Terrific maps, black and white photos, and driving tours are hallmarks of the Battleground series and this volume does not disappoint. I highly recommend this volume as well as St. Julien: Ypres (Battleground Europe) If you are interested in mining and underground warfare, I would suggest UNDERGROUND WARFARE 1914-1918
