a brand new acquisition to compare against Haakon Austbo's excellent version on naxos of this knotty, yet trancendent piano work. Messiaen's 2 hour (dbl cd) opus to both his beloved new wife - the dedicatee + performer here , as well as to God, is a extraordinary, demanding, part delicate - equal part dissonant magnum opus for any piano performer or listener.
Loriod's here plays at tempi generally swifter than Austbo ,but with a decent 1970's recording, fine playing + rapt intensity - this bargain release on apex of the orignal 1972 (i think i was) recording is highly recommended. the latest version by Aimard at full price has received much praise for its dazzling playing + i must get around to hearing that also , however this recording here offers many moments of wonder in one of the 20th C most extraordinary solo piano works. Peter Hill's "Catalogue d'Oiseau" 1980's piano series by this composer (on unicord/regis)is also strongly recommended.
Loriod here though is highly recommended, although for me Austbo goes deeper.
