This is an extremely intense performance of Quartet for the End of Time. Compared to more refined performces by Tashi (RCA), Shaham (DG) and another excellent EMI recording coupled with Rattle's Turangallira, this version with Beroff sounds even crude at times, but it seems this ensemble is putting more emphasis on the apocalyptic vision and the human suffering of the circumstance in which the music was originally conceived, rahter than on the serenity and the timeless quality of the piece. The dynamic range of piano and other instruments is the widest among many I've listened to so far, as a result the whole work becomes a mini version of Turangallira Symphony.
Coupled with magically vivid performance of Chronochromie, the wonderfully complex work inspired by bird songs, this is well worth adding to your collection.
