If you are new to preaching, or even if you are not, this practical and easy to read book will have a big impact on what you want to say and how you words are received by your audience. It is not a one time read but a reference you can keep on coming back to. I highly recommend it.

A Great Help for Preachers 21 Feb 2014
By Shane Lems - Published on
Format: Paperback
This book, "Messages that Move," isn't a seminary level homiletics book. It's not an in-depth look at how to construct and preach an exegetical sermon from start to finish. Rather, it is a helpful resource on structuring and delivering a sermon. It includes topics such as sermon introductions, application, illustration, explanation, humor, and delivery methods.

Hawkins focuses mostly on what he says are the four major parts of a sermon: 1) the hook (engaging your audience), 2) the book (expositing Scripture), 3) the look (illustrating the biblical point), and 4) the took (sermon application). While the order of those four parts isn't always set in stone, Hawkins says they should be there in each sermon.

While I didn't agree wholeheartedly with everything Hawkins said, he did root his discussions in Scripture. It was also helpful for me to be reminded how preachers need to engage God's people on their level - in a way that relates to their everyday life. One of his main points of the book was also helpful: he said each sermon needs to go somewhere and people need to be convinced they should "go with" the sermon.

While this isn't my favorite book on homiletics, I do recommend it. In fact, as soon as I'm finished with this review, I'm going to go back and outline the book so I don't forget some of the good points Hawkins made. If you need some help writing sermons, or if you need some "how to" review, or if you just need another decent homiletical resource, get this book. (Note: I didn't give this book five stars because it wasn't "the best ever" - but it was helpful and good.)
