OMD - History of Modern

Biography

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (most often abbreviated to OMD or O.M.D. ) are a synth-pop group whose founding members are originally from the Wirral Peninsula, England. OMD were originally assimilated in the greater new wave batch of synthesiser-based acts of the later 1970s-early 1980s. The group was founded in 1978 by Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys who remained, and were perceived as, ... Read more in Amazon's Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark Store

FIRST:let me tell you that I received my copy from Amazon Germany. They released this title a week in advance from Amazon UK.I couldn't wait any longer for this release!!!
SECOND:The best videos of OMD are all here!Great picture quality and sound. All tracks are in STEREO.You will find a great surprise to enjoy earlier clips like SOUVENIR and ENOLA GAY in STEREO.In the VHS Greatest Hits edition these clips were in mono. So, now we can enjoy these clips in a brand new way!!!
The DVD authoring was made by ABBEY ROAD INTERACTIVE,the same guys responsable for the DURAN DURAN Greatest DVD and SPANDAU BALLET CD+DVD.Andy Walter restored the audio, and he did a great job!
So,buy it!

As a life long fan this was a must buy for me. I was't too interested in the CD (as like many i've got all the tracks a few times over) it was the DVD i wanted. Infact really this should really be called 'Messages - The OMD videos' with a audio CD thrown in for free. I've now replaced the ageing VHS tape and am delighted to have been able to that. For the newbie an excellent audio and visual combination to start you on your way!

Every single OMD video ever made. What more can I say? Many of these have never been released in any format. I would have given my eyeteeth for this collection, now all I have to give is a few quid. Highlights for me are Maid of Orleans, Talking Loud and Clear (which was very popular on the video jukeboxes in pubs in summer 1984), Dream of Me and best of all Never Turn Away. These are the cream of a fantastic, unbelievable collection. Of course, most fans will buy this for the DVD, but don't overlook the CD, some of the tracks have been digitally remastered.

Yes, yes, it is a rehash of the Best Of OMD from'88 and The OMD Singles from '98. BUT, and this is a big but...this new package contains ALL of the bands promo videos spanning their entire career.

Some of the videos show their age (although cleaned up nicely for this release), and are worth watching for nostalgic purposes. However, some of the newer vids are stunning - I will make particular mention of Walking on the Milky Way, Dream of Me, and Then You Turn Away - the purchase price is worth it for these tracks alone.

As a bonus, you get 20 remastered tracks on CD - not one of them a duffer (which makes this greatest hits package virtually unique, against most other artists).

Bargain purchase.

The cd is very good with the remastered tracks etc, and it contains pretty much all the chart entries (few absentees, but there you go) to keep anyone happy BUT this is a must-have for either OMD fans or anyone who was around in the 80s because the dvd contains 31 videos (yes, THIRTY ONE) running through everything they did, plus loads of tracks I'd not seen or heard before. As such the videos act as a reminder of just how much changed in a short space of time regarding what was expected in a pop video, technological tricks and gimmicks, and the group's image - and the vids also act as a reminder of life back in the 80s and to a lesser extent the 90s. They brought back memories which would otherwise have left me, and for that I'm even more pleased with this collection.

This is a great addition to anyone's music collection, and I'd strongly recommend it even if you think you're not much of a fan.

I really can't recommend this collection enough.

I remember falling in love with OMD after seeing the video for Pandora's Box on VH1 when I was in my teens.

The second disc, covering every OMD music video is simply superb. I've got a lot of these in much lower You Tube quality in my explorer favourites folder. The picture quality is as good as you're going to get without them being remastered. Considering how old these videos are, the picture quality is very, very good.

I must have watched the DVD through 4/5 times already and I only picked it up a few weeks ago,

Highlights for me;

Enola Gay
Secret
Pandora's Box
If You Leave
Souvenir

This really is a collection of some iconic 80s music videos. As I said at the start, I really can't recommend this enough.

There are so many bands from the late 70's and early 80's that have GREAT videos from their heyday that never see the light of day (see Depeche Mode) while a group like OMD slaps them all onto this superb DVD for fans to see. I am only 30 but grew up seeing the videos on MTV as a little kid in the late 80's. Even my 24 year old wife has gotten into OMD after I played the material off the greatest hits compilations from the past. This one tops them all though. I'm so happy -someone- in the band or close to them took the time to protect the material for all those years. I can't recall how many times I've read bands lost their masters for videos, etc over time. Kudos to Andy and Paul!

Now, I'm not a big OMD fan. I've only just got into them in the last few weeks, and it's because of this collection of hits. For me, it's a perfect little introduction to their music. 20 tracks covering all of their albums from 1980 until 1996. It adds a bit more to the original Best of released in 1988, and has one or two tracks not used on the 1998 Singles collection (namely Genetic Engineering and Secret) so for me it is worth the money over those two.

Electricity and Souvenir were the first OMD songs I ever heard, from the original Best of that my mother had on CD when I was a child. For some reason, I didn't really feel interested to listen to the rest of it at the time. Then earlier this year I was somehow reminded of Messages, and downloaded it because I needed it for a project. I then thought 'well, maybe they do have other good songs, would do no harm to check them out' and I think I went to Enola Gay next, one of their biggest hits. Then Sailing on the Seven Seas, which I found really catchy, but not quite 1991 sounding. The rest of this album just followed, and I continued to enjoy the eclectic sounds of the instruments and the alternating between Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys on vocals. The varied sound and effects is one of the reasons why I enjoy the 80's synth-pop genre most, with other artists like Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears and Kraftwerk.

Locomotion I love because of it's quirkiness, like Genetic Engineering. Talking Loud and Clear has a great sax solo which somehow reminds me of the Home & Away theme. Secret as well, I love the sample used and although at times I anticipate when it comes in, I still enjoy it.
