Biography

José Carreras, one of the legendary "Three Tenors," was born Josep Carreras (Josep is his Catalan name, the equivalent of the Castilian Spanish José) in Barcelona in 1946. He began singing at a very early age; family lore holds that he serenaded passengers on a voyage home from Argentina when he was only five. He was inspired by the film biography The Great Caruso, ... 4.0 out of 5 stars Attractive juvenile work well performed 12 July 2013
By Bacchus TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
While this work does not bear all of Puccini's mature skills as a composer (the choral and orchestral writing is more reminiscent of Verdi or Gounod), it is still an attractive work to listen to. Don't expect too much in the way of profundity or polished appreciation of structure - it rather fizzles out at the end.

I can't imagine a better performance. The Italian conductor, Claudio Scimone (perhaps not well known in Britain but very well thought of in Italy) conducts a British orchestra and choir who do a marvellous job. The two vocal soloists, Jose Carreras and Hermann Prey, are superb. I love their voices although I do think that Carreras takes a few more liberties with note values and rubati than I would personally prefer (Prey is more literal).

I had great fun listening to this recording.

3.0 out of 5 stars Messa di Gloras 5 Aug 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I sang this in the early 1960's after hearing the world premier recording( sent from America.)
sung by an all Italian soloists,/choir ,conductor &orchestra.
what a difference ! unfortunately, although the record is well done , it lacks a certain quality.
If I may say a little stilted, a little "English" ,everything precise, no colour.
the modern younger generation would enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Puccini is honored by Prey and Carreras and Scimone! 30 April 2001

Ok, I'm not sure but I think that this is only the second 5 star review I've given out. Maybe the third. I really need to review my own reviews. Ok, who cares, lets get to the point of this review. Question: "Is this a must buy version of Messa di Gloria"?. Answer:" You bet it is".
Now let's totally forget for a moment that Jose Carreras is the tenor soloist in this piece. Ok, Ok, thats impossible but if it were you'd be focusing on the chorus and the conductor first and then probalbly the soloist, provided that he's at least decent, next. Great credit should therefore be given by Claudio Scimone and the Ambrosian Singers and the Philharmonia Orchestra. My favorite from them is what they do with 'Gloria'. I've tried to sing along but umm....without the music in front of me....yeah right.
Jose Carreras is not likely to be unknown to us after all, he is in that "group of opera guys" as some of my friends who never listen to classical music refer to the Three Tenors. LoL. I cant say enough of how he brings the right touch to these ever delicate solos. I should also aknowledge Prey for his part in this great music as well. Hmm....so Puccini started writing this Mass at the ages of 17 and 18 huh? That is talent for you then. Buy this version of Messa di Gloria.

5.0 out of 5 stars The beginner's guide to Puccini 30 May 2008
By Eric S. Kim - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This CD is certainly a must own. Puccini created this Mass when he was 17, and although it's certainly not as good as his operas, this piece shows the composer's talent at an early stage. It's not as good as the Masses by Mozart or Beethoven when it comes to etherality, but its Dvorak-like flow and its early Romantic feel makes up for it. The soloists Jose Carreras and Hermann Prey do a fantastic job here, and Claudio Scimone never misses a step. The Philharmonia and the Ambrosian Singers are flawless, and the audio quality contains no missing links.

3.0 out of 5 stars Puccini Messa di Gloria 18 May 2014

The piece is a beautiful one, but the sound quality on this cd is not the greatest because it was recorded over 30 years ago.
3.0 out of 5 stars but Carreras was not as good as I had hoped 21 July 2014
By Louise M. Werner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Lovely for the most part, but Carreras was not as good as I had hoped. His name was one of my reasons for buying the album, but if I heard it and did not realize it was he, I would not have bought it.
