His urgent, fragmented lyrics are full of surreal imagery and neat turns-of-phrase (as in the satirical track "Lovely Daughter" where he considers the attraction of Rastafarian females--"You're very prestigious / I just did your family tree / I've got my eye upon your culture"). Definitely Not another REM/Nirvana Clone,

I bought this on the back on the appearance of Merz on 'LATER', where I was well impressed with them. They look like a great live band, bags of energy, visually and musically odd. Conrad Lamberts' vocal delivery is both superb and unique, I guess partly shaped by his large hooter (great side profile of Conrad on the back sleeve of the CD by the way).The album is good overall, but the tracks definitely vary in quality, almost as if Merz havn't quite settled on their style yet. The first two tracks 'Weathers Apart' and 'Engine Heart' are both outstanding, after which it tails off onto more average work, so I was a bit dissapointed after such a brilliant opening. The tracks have clever dynamics and are well produced. The use of interesting rhythm programming (Bjork-ish), the occasional slightly cheesy guitar solo (Edwyn Collins-ish) and some nice analogue keyboard sounds work well with Conrads unusual phrasing. They don't sound much like anybody past or present (not an easy feat to achieve). Good stuff, I would definitly buy again even if just for tracks 1 and 2, these are real class. I look forward to a new album from Merz.

The only difficulty with Merz is that it's so difficult to describe. Whenever I rave,people ask 'well,what kind of music is it?' and I really can't come up with an adequate description. It's different and diverse-not pop,not rock,not dance, not funk,not hip-hop,not guitar indie,not trip-hop but if you enjoy great music in any or all of the above 'genres' you will love Merz. Listen to it and make up your own mind. I promise you'll be hooked.

Based on this album Merz is the outstanding new talent of the UK music scene. The music is simply amazing. Conveying every human emotion in a whirlwind of sounds and rythyms.
