Product Description

Review

Handsome, respectful and well organized, this book presents its complex subject in a forthright, affectionate manner, detailing Peake's childhood; his development as an artist, illustrator and writer; his domestic life; his service during WW2; the writing of many works, including the Gormenghast trilogy, followed by his tragic illness - later diagnosed as Parkinson's disease - and, after much suffering, his early death. Peake's unrestrained imagination has influenced a generation of writers. Perhaps with this book, his influence on artists will become equally profound.' --Locus Magazine

Ignored for decades, the twisted genius of Mervyn Peake is finally getting the attention it deserves --JOEL MEADOWS - Time

I was looking for something else on the library shelf and suddenly our eyes met, from across the empty aisle. Then I was clutching in my arms the most wonderful book in the world: 'Mervyn Peake: The Man and Hist Art.'...The text is fascinating. I didn't know Peake was born to missionary parents in China. Peake plus 'Treasure Island' adds up to one of my favourite books. --John Holbo: The Verve

Product Description

In this highly illustrated new paperback edition, Peake's son Sebastian Peake has collaborated with Alison Eldred and G. Peter Winnington, author of an highly acclaimed biography of Mervyn Peake, to compile a stunning collection of illustrations, paintings, photographs, letters, notebook pages and other material much of which has never been published to produce a unique memoir of the artist s life and work. Contributors who discuss various aspects of his literary and visual output include the writers Michael Moorcock and Joanne Harris, Langdon Jones, editor of Titus Alone, artists John Howe and Chris Riddell, David Glass and John Constable, creators of the stage version of the Gormenghast trilogy, and Estelle Daniels, producer of the BBC dramatization. The book includes sections on Peake s upbringing as the son of a missionary in China, his development as an illustrator, artist and writer, marriage and fatherhood, his wartime experiences, creation of the Titus trilogy, Mr Pye and other literary works, and his tragic decline as illness overcame him, resulting in early death.

This book tells you all about Peake - his personal life and his painting. It does what it says on the tin. And it is beautifully illustrated. I particularly appreciated the way that photos accompanied the narrative very appropriately - that is to say, the contemporary photos were there just when you'd want to see a picture as a reference to the text. Just looking at the pictures would tell you so much about Peake as an artist. His ability to paint in a variety of ways is fully documented. Different people contribute to the book, allowing those who know best to tell it as it was. And the myth of Peake as madman is dispensed with here. All is explained in a very elegant and attractive way. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in Mervyn Peake.

I originally purchased a copy of this book for my son, a true creative soul in his own right, and having seen the wonders within its pages, I could not resist having my own copy!
Mervyn Peake was one amazing author and artist; funny, witty, incredibly observant and masterful in his visual and written descriptions.
I have been besotted by Mr. Peake's writing for over 40 years, and this book now allows me to totally indulge myself in his visual creativity.
An amazing man, an amazing book - I cannot recommend it too highly!

must have for Peake fans 30 May 2008
By Andrew Ice - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is by far the best collection of Peake's art . The reproduction quality is top notch, and there is much that I've never seen in any other book, and I think I've seen them all.
I've had this book for a week, and have already turned on 3 people who had never heard of Peake, just by leaving it out, and letting them flip through it. One ordered the book, and another was inspired to read the Gormenghast series, so what more can I say ?

Outstanding 1 Mar 2011

I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer-this is a must have book for fans of the great Mervyn Peak. He was, quite simply, a genius on so many levels it is (and I say this without a hint of hyperbole) breathtaking. This book does a wonderful job of providing an excellent overview of his artwork. Heart-wrenching to think about what more he could have produced had he not been so cruelly taken by Parkinson's at such a young age.
