I've never seen "The belly of an architect", I came upon this soundtrack when somebody lent me a collection of Mertens' work that included "Struggle For Pleasure" which took my breath away; after that I bought the album. Listening to it without having any idea of the context in which the songs were placed did not affect my enjoyment of it a single bit. It's a marvellous album, it has all the feeling and power we've come to expect of Mertens, and yet it's different somehow, probably the synths adding something new to the mixture. In any case, with or without the movie, this is a wonderful album, (a note, it's 98% keyboards with just a touch of brass that might or might not have been synthesized) a number of songs follow a theme and some may find these repetitive, personally I adore the variations. If you like classical music, and Mertens in particular, jump right in.

Close Cover, Tantour and Birds of a Mind stand out and easily hold their own against all the crop of "Chill out" albums available today. In fact Close Cover is the perfect track to listen to if you are sitting in a cafe by the beach at 2.00 a.m. or watching your child sleeping. Music is haunting, addictive and has real resonance and feeling. This is the only review I've done as I feel the SM review is well off the mark. Excellent Album - and you don't need to have seen the film to love it.

I love this music. It stuck in my head from when I first saw the film and I had the LP before getting this CD. Strong piano chords bring back the picture postcard display of swaggering Roman architecture and the melancholy pieces the film's human themes. Most of it probably stands on its own without the film but if you liked it you'd want to see the film and enjoy it in situ.
