Buy this CD, and every other CD by Clay. You won't be disappointed!!!!
This man is magic. He has the most beautiful supple, powerful and sweet tenor ... his voice will be the new sound for the twenty-first century, and it's wonderfully showcased in his new Christmas album, 'Merry Christmas With Love'.
Breaking with the trend of late that has seen Christmas songs re-recorded and funked-up beyond recognition, Clay treats us to a CD of Christmas classics that would make their composers smile if they were all still around to hear. This album truly conjures up images of glowing fires, crystal sherry glasses, family, friends ... and the birth of a special baby boy.
Standouts on the album include an 'O Holy Night', a much recorded classic that is treated very sensitively, resisting the tempting opportunity to go overboard and belt; 'Mary Did You Know', a more minor-key, reflective piece that sings of the future of Mary's child; a superb re-recording of 'Don't Save it All For Christmas Day', originally recorded by Celine Dion but stolen by Clay and joyously sung, and the introduction of the title track to a new audience.
Having picked those out though ... I love them all. And I defy anybody to listen to this and not be moved.
Clay Aiken's a man to watch. He's also certainly one to listen to ... buy this now and enjoy him for as long as possible!
Clay has a smooth, strong voice that is a pleasure to listen to. Backed by some great instruments, it felt like Christmas right off the bat.
Of course, part of that may be the song selection. He makes his way through the usual suspects. "O Holy Night," "Silent Night," "Sleigh Ride," "The Christmas Song," "Winter Wonderland," and "Joy to the World" all make appearances here. The arrangements and Clay's voice mange to keep them from feeling tired and familiar, however.
Also included are modern classics "Mary, Did You Know?" and "Don't Save it All for Christmas Day." I was surprised when I realized which song the title song was. I've only heard it one place before, Sandi Patty's first Christmas CD. And Clay manages to make me forget the Sandi version, a very hard feat indeed. I'm not familiar at all with "What are You Doing New Year's Eve?" but I like this version of the song.
I'm going to have to go back and check out Clay's other release and pay more attention to those on American Idol. If you love Christmas music, you need this CD. It's already claimed a spot between Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole, high honors from me indeed.
