As a child moves from 5 years old to 6, they will start to ask questions about things and words that are out of the scope of our "expertise". We found the solution to this problem with this book, MERRIAM-WEBSTER CHILDREN'S DICTIONARY (Ages 4-8). "Over 35,000 entries and more than 3,000 full-color illustrations", this reference guide will satisfy the inquisitive mind of your junior scientist at home. This dictionary is kid-approved as my son spotted it on the library shelf himself and could not be separated from it until he had his own copy. As he opened the pages and progressed from only looking at the pictures to fully digesting the definitions, we got the quiet time we needed and he got the answers he was looking for, accurately from DK's renowned language experts.

This dictionary has more entries than many conventional ones, and it's loaded with photographs and illustrations which keep the attention of the kids going and going... my children often look up a word and then keep in "researching" for more interesting words driven by the images... of course, some entries are mostly applicable to American English, or they have the American spelling, as expected.

Amazon age description is not accurate 3 April 2013
By Patricia T - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
I bought this dictionary for a child 6 years old because the description said it was for 6-9 years of age. Inside the Children's Dictionary, though, it says it is for children 8 years and older. So, be aware, the Amazon description is NOT accurate. I also bought the Elementary Dictionary for a child 8 years old because it was for ages 8 and older. The Elementary Dictionary had larger print. The Children's Dictionary has really small print and is a much heavier book than the Elementary Dictionary.

MW Children's Dictionary 21 Jan. 2012
By Mother Hen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
By the time your children are old enough to be looking up spellings and definitions by themselves, they will find far too many words they search are not included. Any child in 3rd grade or up needs a more comprehensive dictionary. Lots of pretty, big, colorful pictures, but they come at the expense of words. I can't recommend it; my kids outgrew it by age 8.

(Sample of words not included in this dictionary: amplitude, beguile, crass, drivel, endive, frumpy, guttersnipe.)

What is the point? 2 Sept. 2009
By Jaime Anne Biondi - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I bought this for my 8 and 6 year-old children. We have tried to use it about a dozen times and only found one or two of the words we were looking for. I've realized that, by now, if there is a word they don't know, then it's probably not in this dictionary.

MUCH better dictionary that the Scholastic one! 26 Dec. 2013
By mom-of-four - Published on Amazon.com

We homeschool, my boys are in 1st and 2nd grade and this dictionary has been wonderful. It's easy to use, it had far more words that other "comparable" children's dictionaries (such as the Scholastic one) and I imagine this dictionary will get them through their elementary years well. We own two.

A surprisingly welcome gift 15 April 2009
By Enid Pearsons - Published on Amazon.com

Merriam-Webster Children's DictionaryI bought this with some trepidation as a gift for an eight-year-old boy whose primary interests, I had been told, involved sports activities that kept him moving. I thought he would hate it, but that he might somehow find it useful for school. And I hoped that its many illustrations, sidebars, pages with snakes and dinosaurs, and excellent definitions would eventually win him over. Much to my surprise, and the utter shock of his parents, the boy was fascinated by the book from the beginning--absorbed in it, in fact. So don't hesitate. This is an excellent first dictionary.
