I bought these Merrells for a weekend walking in the Peak District. I am in no way an experienced hiker - no maps in plastic round my neck, no sandles'n'socks - but wanted a pair of decent trainers to get me up and down the hills. I didn't fancy getting big clunky walking boots, which I'm told have to be 'worn in', so these shoes were a perfect solution. For such a sturdy shoe, they are incredibly light and super-comfortable. They are not squishy like some trainers, but it felt like they'd been specially contoured to fit the exact shape of my feet - amazing! I wore them ALL weekend - even to the pub in the evening. I wondered if they would leave my feet in blisters after the first walk, but they didn't rub at all and my feet weren't sweaty or smelly.
I don't think they are waterproof (although haven't walked them in the rain yet) but the material is quite breathable so I would imagine they dry out really quickly. The only thing I noticed was new out of the box they have an odd aroma...something similar to a barnyard or manure smell. I think that's something to do with the materials that Merrell shoes are made out of; I once had a pair of Merrell sandles which had the exact same smell. In a way, its a strangely appropriate smell for walking about in the countryside!
I'm now quite in love with my Merrells. I have a feeling they're going to last years.
