3.0 out of 5 stars Time travel and Theology, 11 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Merlin Set-up, The (Paperback)
The idea was a good one. A group of children meet up with Merlin, the wizard and prophet of Arthurian romance while staying on holiday in present day Bath. They are sent back in time to visit Bath at various periods in its history - Roman, eighteenth century, Victorian and other eras. In between visits they discuss philosophy and theology with Merlin and consider many of the issues that face the human race at the beginning of the third millennium. However, in practice the novel does not entirely succeed in achieving the author's grand designs. The children are not really very convincing as children and the lack of a storyline means that the book ends up as a philosophical treatise rather than a genuine novel. But I found the overall concept interesting and I was especially intrigued by the author's suggestion that the Arthurian knights might have their twentieth century equivalents in such unlikely candidates as John A.T. Robinson, the controversial Bishop of Woolwich, Charles Wiliams, the novelist and poet, and Teilhard de Chardin, the radical theologian who attempted to integrate evolutionary theory with Christianity.
