A well made razor that takes time to get used to, if you are coming from Mach 3 Gillette type of products, etc. A design that may well be appreciated by some, or found that great by others. Blade is held very well in place, whole thing is pretty heavy, razor is fairly short (in my own personal and subjective opinion), hence I am also looking getting a Merkur Vision.

Most important: take your time to get to know your skin, how your face hair grows (grain direction), get a very good badger, a nice bowl, some good (Personna or Merkur) blades, some nice and classic shaving soaps and creams (contact me or check my wish list for recommendations), learn to make proper and good lather, then take your patience during the first few shaves. If it is the first time you shave with a DE (double edge) razor, the whole process will take time to adjust to.

It is a ritual, not a three-minute habit you have to do every (other) morning. Shaving should be enjoyed, and the Futur helps a lot in this direction.

Overall: Recommended.

I have used double edged safety razors all my life - well over thirty years of shaving now.

Ten years ago I bought a Merkur Travel Razor with Black Pouch for travelling, which I loved - rather more expensive than a regular razor, but even in this diminutive travel size far superior to most others I had used. So when I returned home, I bought a Merkur Futur.

Since this razor is different from any others you will have used, let me explain why it is so good, and some of the finer points of using it:

1. The adjustable head is more useful than you might think. Different razors have different blade gaps but, except for the Futur and in some ways the Merkur of Solingen Chrome Slant Safety Razor 37, all are fixed. If the gap of the razor you have just bought doesn't suit, then tough.
Now finding the correct blade gap is not just a matter of personal preference. I sometimes adjust mine mid-shave, opening up the gap to get at those persistent neck hairs. More important still is which blade you are using. I now mostly use Feather blades, for which a gap of 4 or higher works best - indeed with the gap set at 2 the blade simply glides over the top of my beard without really cutting. However setting the gap at 4 when using Derby blades rips your skin to pieces, when set to 2 they work just fine.

2. The two sides don't have quite the same geometry. I dare say they are meant to, and I expect other razors are much the same, but I hadn't noticed it. However in my opinion / experience this does not matter.

Years ago I used a run-of-the-mill safety razor with a butterfly opening and anything available blades. Never had complaints and was not aware or cared about options. When the new disposables came out decades ago I moved to them. Then the blade count kept creeping up. Looks like I was well on the way to a 10 blade electronically shakable disposable head that played "God Save the Queen" while reaching into each pour for the roots.

Then it happened. A fixed income and I had to reevaluate my choices. I reach back to the good old days. But wait there are now choices that I never had. What good old days? No cheep Chinese knock off of the old quickie safety razor for me.

What was I to do? I was faced with too many choices and recommendations. The video reviews were my favorite. I wanted everything; my eyes grew wide and gluttonous. Who cared about the fixed income now it was what kind of shiny toy could I afford?

Settle down and take a deep breath. Once again go at this practically. Weight, grip, angle, durability, etc. from all the choices the best balance turned out to be "Merkur Futur Double Edge Safety Razor #700." I gave up the familiar butterfly opening and opted for a closeness dial. I will have to learn to put the blade in differently.

The razor came in an air-bubble mailer. The razor being heavy worked its way out of the flimsy construction-board package and was loose in the mailer. It was heavy like promised. I did not think the handle was any longer than normal. I pushed off the blade holder with one thumb before reading the included instructions. Inserted the blade.

With blade in place I swung it around and challenged my beard in the mirror "On Guard!" It winched.

I've been using one of these for about 10 years now. Have never got on with disposables or electric shavers. I've used various single-blade razors over the years, but the weight of this is beautiful, with a good, sharp blade it gives a great shave. (And I'm a fan of the Merkur blades as well, get more shaves out of them than Wilkinson Sword -- but there's no noticeable difference on the first couple of shaves).

I haven't used shaving foam for about 20 years, so I don't know about soap and foam making it slippy, but it's fine with oil.

As for heat conductivity, you simply don;t need to have the water so hot!
