4.0 out of 5 stars A good razor 23 Mar 2010
A well made razor that takes time to get used to, if you are coming from Mach 3 Gillette type of products, etc. A design that may well be appreciated by some, or found that great by others. Blade is held very well in place, whole thing is pretty heavy, razor is fairly short (in my own personal and subjective opinion), hence I am also looking getting a Merkur Vision.

Most important: take your time to get to know your skin, how your face hair grows (grain direction), get a very good badger, a nice bowl, some good (Personna or Merkur) blades, some nice and classic shaving soaps and creams (contact me or check my wish list for recommendations), learn to make proper and good lather, then take your patience during the first few shaves. If it is the first time you shave with a DE (double edge) razor, the whole process will take time to adjust to.

It is a ritual, not a three-minute habit you have to do every (other) morning. Shaving should be enjoyed, and the Futur helps a lot in this direction.

Overall: Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful weight 26 Oct 2009
By Franc
I've been using one of these for about 10 years now. Have never got on with disposables or electric shavers. I've used various single-blade razors over the years, but the weight of this is beautiful, with a good, sharp blade it gives a great shave. (And I'm a fan of the Merkur blades as well, get more shaves out of them than Wilkinson Sword -- but there's no noticeable difference on the first couple of shaves).

I haven't used shaving foam for about 20 years, so I don't know about soap and foam making it slippy, but it's fine with oil.

As for heat conductivity, you simply don;t need to have the water so hot!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best razor I have ever used 14 July 2013
By Remus
I have used double edged safety razors all my life - well over thirty years of shaving now.

Ten years ago I bought a Merkur Travel Razor with Black Pouch for travelling, which I loved - rather more expensive than a regular razor, but even in this diminutive travel size far superior to most others I had used. So when I returned home, I bought a Merkur Futur.

Since this razor is different from any others you will have used, let me explain why it is so good, and some of the finer points of using it:

1. The adjustable head is more useful than you might think. Different razors have different blade gaps but, except for the Futur and in some ways the Merkur of Solingen Chrome Slant Safety Razor 37, all are fixed. If the gap of the razor you have just bought doesn't suit, then tough.
Now finding the correct blade gap is not just a matter of personal preference. I sometimes adjust mine mid-shave, opening up the gap to get at those persistent neck hairs. More important still is which blade you are using. I now mostly use Feather blades, for which a gap of 4 or higher works best - indeed with the gap set at 2 the blade simply glides over the top of my beard without really cutting. However setting the gap at 4 when using Derby blades rips your skin to pieces, when set to 2 they work just fine.

2. The two sides don't have quite the same geometry. I dare say they are meant to, and I expect other razors are much the same, but I hadn't noticed it. However in my opinion / experience this does not matter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing razor 22 Feb 2012
By Erick
This was indeed my very first razor after a very long research, and let me tell you that this looks indestructible!

I love that it is adjustable, and can be adjust it for parts of my face that tend to be more fragile.

I use this razor with Derby blades, never had a problem using them.
Extremely heavy, but this makes it less tempting to put pressure, so for me it is a great thing as I am in the learning steps.
Feels balanced, and very high quality. Make sure you get a razor stand so you can really see the beauty of this razor.
I do believe it is in the overpriced side, but when you think about, if it will last you a lifetime why does price really matter?
Very easy to pull apart and clean, just make that after some year you lubricate it back.

Overall an amazing razor that is a keeper, why buy several razors when one is enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Futur - what a treat 21 Oct 2011
By Tolvtre
Verified Purchase
After trying different combinations og blades and razors, I still had a hard time getting the finish of my shaves to be as i wanted. Besides using a 3-pass shave, i tried techniques like "j-hooking" and "scrubbing" but persistence on my part resulted in skinirritation more than anything else.

Enter Merkur Futur - after looking through different reviews I decided that i'd give it a whirl.

So, its bigger and heavier than the avg., meaning that you just have to pay a bit more attention when shaving places like under the nose. Besides that, its an absolute gem!! Easy adjustment, effortless change of blades those who complain about the chances of being cut when changing blades, are just big girls, its easy as pie ), great build quality...and most importantly it shaves impressivly, with minimum effort and as few passes as possible. Leaving cheeks, upper lip and 5 o'clock! shadow as supple as a baby's behind.
