After many years using the latest Gillete multiblade, and having decided that the Fusion was just not an advance on the Mach3, I thought I'd give DE shaving a go when I saw the plastic Wilkinson safety razor on sale at Boots. It was pretty cheap, so I thought I'd try it. I've been using the Wilkinson for the last year using Wilkinson and then Merkur blades, and I was very impressed with the closeness of the shave and the lack of burn (I have sensitive skin). After some (considerable)practise, I now have the basic technique of DE shaving. Although the Wilkinson was fine, I wanted a more robust razor, and after a lot of research, decided on the 34C.
I ordered this on Saturday afternoon (Bank Holiday weekend), and it arrived this morning(Wednesday). I'd deliberately not shaved since Saturday to test it out (I'm off work at the present). It is superb - no other word for it. The build quality is first class and it is a very pleasing weight in the hand. The shave was very close with very few passes.
It was a delight to shave with; the added weight of this razor compared to the Wilkinson does take a bit of getting used to, so that I did nick myself once on this first use, but I expect that will not recur once I adapt to it.
Certainly, for the first several shaves after I started with the Wilkinson, I thought I was at risk of cutting my face to bits! I am now a firm convert to DE shaving - it takes a very little more time, but with very impressive results. The blades last for ages; in the year I've been DE shaving, I have used the 5 Wilkinson blades that came with the razor and 1 Merkur - I actually can't recall when I put the merkur in! I've just put a new Merkur in for this razor! It must be said that I have never needed to shave often - my usual average is about three times a week, so if your usage is heavier, you'll obviously get through the blades quicker than I do, but having said that, I used to get through 1 Mach3 cartridge per week , and we all know what they cost!
The 34C is a very nice piece of equipment with a reassuringly solid feel and (as I said) excellent build quality. It is also very compact, so I see no need for a travel razor any more. I am, just on one shave, extremely happy with this purchase, and doubt if I will see a need to buy another razor again. I heartily recommend it.

I have been using this for the last month, I suffer from very sensitive skin and my skin has never been in better condition. Modern multi-blade razors cut below skin level and this can cause irritation not to mention the fact your dragging five blades across the skin in one pass.
Plus the blades cost pennies to replace.
The razor is solid with enough weight so that you dont have to apply additional pressure (always let the blade do the work and never push), blades are quickly changed plus the handle has a really good grip texture.
The main points to remember are TAKE YOUR TIME (cut with the grain) and use a good lathered shave cream (some for sensitive skin types) and brush.
Plus the blades cost pennies to replace.
The razor is solid with enough weight so that you dont have to apply additional pressure (always let the blade do the work and never push), blades are quickly changed plus the handle has a really good grip texture.
The main points to remember are TAKE YOUR TIME (cut with the grain) and use a good lathered shave cream (some for sensitive skin types) and brush.

I used to hate shaving. I used to use a 'shaving system' from a well-known vendor of expensive cartridges. It's now in the bin.
I was sick of shelling out for a pack of blades that wouldn't last anywhere near the length of time they should. Taking a week's growth off was simply painful and I would try to make a blade last a lot longer than it should in the interests of economy. This of course involved more passes and more pressure. The end result was pain and usually razor rash and ingrown hairs.
Now, I can afford to be a little wasteful. Couple this with a pack of 100 Derby blades for £9.90 and I can use a new blade for each shave without my wallet screaming at me. A decent shaving brush and cream are essential - I'll leave it to others to advise you which ones. Suffice to say don't shave with anything that comes out of a can.
Economics aside, the actual razor is solidly made and well engineered. It feels like it could be the last razor I ever need to buy (I'm 25). It has a nice feel to it too - nicely balanced and doesn't feel like you're shaving with a child's plaything.
Coupled with a good lather and decent blade, this takes off a week's growth without you noticing. Going back for a second (or third) pass gives you a really nice close shave. It took me about half a dozen shaves before I could confidently shave without nicking myself. Please, even if you 'know how to shave' and don't want to take advice from a bloke in his twenties, look at youtube or one of the many forums about for tips.
Shaving takes a little longer with this razor than it did with a cartridge, but the end result is so much better it feels like time well spent. It's one of the day's little rituals for me now, and I actually quite enjoy it.
