I know that many of Julie Garwood's fans may not agree, but I enjoy her contemporary romantic suspence more than her previous historicals. For some reason, her characters seem more true to life, and while the main focus is, of course, on our hero and heroine, their surroundings also play an important role.
In this tale, our heroine Dr. Michelle Renard aka Dr. Mike recieves a package from her dead cousin which contains evdence of her husband's (the cousin's husband) white collar robary, together with three of his friends, in a little group called 'The Sowing Cirlcle.'
Dr. Mike is fallen on by Theo Buchanan when he suffers from a burst appenix on the way to a speach he is to be giving in New Orleans, and he falls for her. (Silly but it works.) On a return trip to New Orleans, Theo hunts up Michelle in the small town, on the edge of the Louisiana bayous, that she is from, only to discover that she has been suffering from a few break-ins, and she doesn't feel safe. Her instincts are proven right when her house is fired upon by the bad guys, and she and Theo escape into the bayous.
This is a wonderful read, that is sure to pull you away from reality and into a world where bad guys don't win, and happy endings are right around the corner. Garwood does a good job with the secondary characters, giving you hope for books that will bring these people back. Unlike her historicals, you can tell that characters have a full character protrait somewhere, if only in the authors mind. These people are not just names that spout out information important to the plot. I highly recomend this to anyone in search of a little escapism in either the mystery or roamnce categories, as the romance does not preclude the rest of the plot.
