Amazon.co.uk Review

In Mercy, Theo Buchanan, the brother of FBI agent Nick Buchanan from Heartbreaker, Garwood's first foray into suspense fiction, meets surgeon Dr Michelle "Mike" Renard when he throws up on her designer dress at a New Orleans gala. Dr Mike saves Theo's life with an emergency appendectomy, enabling him to return to Boston and his job as a federal prosecutor.

But Theo can't stop thinking about Mike and her little hometown on the bayou. After concluding an investigation and trial that brings down a powerful organised crime syndicate, Theo receives several death threats and his boss recommends he keep a low profile. What better place to go incognito than Bowen, Louisiana, where the catfish practically throw themselves at your fishing pole and where a certain pretty young doctor is opening her new practice? But when Theo arrives, he finds life in Bowen isn't quite as idyllic as he thought. Someone has ransacked Mike's new offices and seems dead-set on harming her. As Theo struggles to protect Mike, he uncovers a ring of upper-crust criminals willing to do anything, even murder to keep their dirty little secret--all $40 million of it--from being discovered. What connection could they possibly have to Mike? And why does everyone under the age of 18 keep calling Theo "Coach"? Join perennial favourite Garwood on a journey into the quirky close-knit communities of the Louisiana bayou and the journey a man and woman devoted to their careers undertake as they fall passionately in love.

With Mercy and Heartbreaker, bestselling author Julie Garwood shows she has a new calling--contemporary romantic suspense fiction. While long-time fans of Garwood hope she won't forsake the historical romance genre that has been so successful for her, this versatile author is coming into her own as a creator of amazingly complex and detailed suspense novels. --Alison Trinkle, Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The story is excellent, the characters well thought of and interesting. The romance between Michelle and Theo was great!! What a guy, I would love to have him!!! I recommend this book to all of Julies fans. I have and have read all her books...this one is definitely among the good ones.

This is the first Julie Garwood book that I've read, and I loved it.

The descriptive writing was so good, I would say I watched this book, rather like a film, than read it.

The plot was neat, there was no wondering about how things had tied together. Some good twists and turns, it didn't treat the reader like a moron and left you to work things out alongside the characters.

The humour was excellent and the characters believable. I found myself wondering what they were doing beyond the end of the book!

All in all, a well balanced novel, I thoroughly recommend it and look forward to reading more of this excellent author's work.

Thrilling love story 24 Nov 2002
By Farfalla VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I know that many of Julie Garwood's fans may not agree, but I enjoy her contemporary romantic suspence more than her previous historicals. For some reason, her characters seem more true to life, and while the main focus is, of course, on our hero and heroine, their surroundings also play an important role.

In this tale, our heroine Dr. Michelle Renard aka Dr. Mike recieves a package from her dead cousin which contains evdence of her husband's (the cousin's husband) white collar robary, together with three of his friends, in a little group called 'The Sowing Cirlcle.'

Dr. Mike is fallen on by Theo Buchanan when he suffers from a burst appenix on the way to a speach he is to be giving in New Orleans, and he falls for her. (Silly but it works.) On a return trip to New Orleans, Theo hunts up Michelle in the small town, on the edge of the Louisiana bayous, that she is from, only to discover that she has been suffering from a few break-ins, and she doesn't feel safe. Her instincts are proven right when her house is fired upon by the bad guys, and she and Theo escape into the bayous.

This is a wonderful read, that is sure to pull you away from reality and into a world where bad guys don't win, and happy endings are right around the corner. Garwood does a good job with the secondary characters, giving you hope for books that will bring these people back. Unlike her historicals, you can tell that characters have a full character protrait somewhere, if only in the authors mind. These people are not just names that spout out information important to the plot. I highly recomend this to anyone in search of a little escapism in either the mystery or roamnce categories, as the romance does not preclude the rest of the plot.
