Tamarack County, Minnesota Sheriff Corcoran "Cork" O'Connor is back in a thriller that starts with him and Deputy Marsha Dross going out to the Ojibwe reservation to deal with a domestic disturbance, however when they get there they find the people gone and their dogs shot dead. Then someone shoots at Cork, misses, but wounds Marsha.

However, much as he'd like to pursue the shooting he has to investigate the mutilation and murder of Chicago businessman Eddie Jacoby, whose body was found out by the Mercy Falls. After a bit of investigation Cork finds out Jacoby is connected with the reservation's casino and thinks maybe there are underhanded reasons for the murder, but then the attempts on his own life ratchet up and he starts suspecting that the missing folks, their dead dogs and the murder of Shady Eddie Jacoby may all be connected.

Now throw into the mix a hot shot, gorgeous PI named Dina and the brother of someone Cork's wife had an affair with before they were married and things start to get heated and personal, in this book I loved right up until the ending. Yes, I was a tiny bit disappointed to learn that I have to wait till the next book to find out a few bits, however, I'll be lining right up to buy it. Also, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that Mr. Krueger so well describes the haunting and stark beauty of Minnesota's Northwoods that you'll so desperately want to go there someday. I know, I'm already planning my next vacation.
