Review

"Subtly beautiful and utterly intriguing, Rebecca Lim's Mercy series brims with mystery and romance that pull readers through the veil between worlds real and mythical." Andrea Cremer, author of Nightshade

“Mercy is a page-turning mystery with touches of romance. Rebecca Lim has created a modern-day Quantum leap for the teen set (but with angels): well-rounded characters, including a particularly strong heroine; beautifully written prose; and a dark and twisting plot that kept me guessing until the very end. Readers will be begging for the sequel.” Laurie Faria Stolarz, author of Touch and Blue is for Nightmares series

Product Description

An electric combination of angels, mystery and romance, MERCY is the first book in a major new paranormal series.

There's something very wrong with me. I can't remember who I am or how old I am, or even how I got here. All I know is that when I wake up, I could be any one. It is always this way.
There's nothing I can keep with me that will stay. It's made me adaptable.
I must always re-establish ties.
I must tread carefully or give myself away.
I must survive.

Mercy doesn't realise it yet, but as she journeys into the darkest places of the human soul, she discovers that she is one of the celestial host exiled with fallen angel, Luc. Now she must atone for taking his side. To find her own way back to heaven, Mercy must help a series of humans in crisis and keep the unwary from getting caught up in the games that angels play. Ultimately she must choose between her immortal companion, Luc, and a human boy who risks everything for her love.

It was alright 6 Nov 2011
By Jade
Format:Paperback
Mercy is one of those books that could have been amazing, but was let down by a few simple mistakes. I was expecting another fallen angel book, which I think it is but there is such a mystery surrounding the background of the main character that even by the end of the book, we still don't know what Mercy actually is. This is both a great idea, because it adds a touch of originality to the book, but it's also a bad idea in that it means that there is so much thinking involved. It's one thing to have the mystery behind Mercy's background, but with the mystery behind the missing girl also in there it creates a bit too much thinking, for me that is.

The book basically revolves around the mystery of the missing girl, with the paranormal part as an afterthought, which I liked, as I was totally expecting a paranormal angsty Fallen Angel romance along the same lines as Fallen, Hush Hush, The Mortal Instruments. So this book was pretty original and I don't have much to say about the plot. I do have a bone to pick with the blurb however, which speaks of 'angels' and a 'cataclysmic rift', nowhere in the book is Mercy referred to as an angel, and there is nothing about a cataclysmic rift at all, so I'm guessing that is a spoiler for the sequel.

So yeah, I liked the premise of the book, I enjoyed the plot execution. So why is this book not getting a high rating?

Firstly, I never really felt attached to any of the characters. Mercy's mystery means that we can't really understand her, Ryan doesn't really have much character, he's just a bad boy driven to desperation in the search for his missing sister, which is interesting but in no way either relatable or swoon-worthy. The romance isn't really there throughout the book, while they are friends throughout the book the only signs of attraction are Mercy saying that he's hot, no actual chemistry or attraction at all. Then suddenly, at the end, Ryan kisses her and it seems very out of the blue.

I also feel that the narration was very offputting. Lim falls into the trap of over-describing, as well as this, the narration which is Mercy's seems very false. At first she seems older than a teenager, then at some points she seems very mature and then she suddenly develops an attitude and comes across as a normal teen, this inconsistency really put me off this book.

Overall, Mercy is a good book with a few issues that stop it from being amazing. The plot is fantastic and I really enjoyed and I would still recommend this to anyone, with advice to look past the issues.

For Angel Fans 14 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Mercy is the first book in an new angel series by author Rebecca Lim.

This story follows Mercy, who wakes up on a school bus in another girls body. Mercy calls herself a soul snatcher as she inhabits another person's body until she figures out her mission on earth. As Carmen, Mercy stays with a host family as a part of a choir and soon finds out that their daughter Lauren, has been missing for almost 2 years. Realising what her mission is, Mercy begins to help Ryan to solve his sister's disappearance as he believes she is still alive.

I'll be quiet honest, when I say I still have mixed reviews about this book. I've been looking forward to reading it for quiet some time and I'm left with a little disappointment because I only managed to rate it 2 stars. I really liked the concept of Mercy's story but I think because of her confusion about who is she during most of the book, I found that I felt quiet confused too. I'm not to sure if this was done by the author intentionally or not? But for that reason, I feel I didn't really connected with Mercy that well.

I actually did enjoy the journey that Mercy takes with Ryan. I found that I enjoyed this part of the story more than Mercy's background. I felt sometimes that I was reading two different stories and would of much preferred just to read about Mercy & Ryan solving the disappearances and watching their attraction grow.

Nonetheless, I did like the story in the end. The ending for me, actually left me with a little hope that the next few books in the series will be a lot better. I'm really eager to find out what will happen next between Mercy & Ryan, especially considering Mercy will have no memory of him once she enters a new body.

I do believe that this book will be a hit within the Paranormal Romance world and even though I thought the book wasn't brilliant, I will still pick up the rest of the books in the future.

By Book Angel Emma VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
OK I will admit to being totally seduced by the cover on this one, I didn't even read the synopsis before I started reading it, which might explain my confusion at the beginning of the book.

Written in first person narrative from Mercy's perspective occasionally addressing the reader directly as a form of making the reader part of the story. The story opens with the impression of Mercy having lost all her memories, of inhabiting different host bodies. I wondered if Mercy was a spirit or maybe had been reincarnated on numerous occasions. The action occurs in the present with no backstory to begin with. Parts of which I did find confusing, probably due to the fact that I did not read the synopsis. I did not fully understand how Mercy could know what she looks like if she shares other peoples bodies and has no memories of her own life.

The narrative combines two mysteries simultaneously - Who is Mercy? and Where is Lauren? A Gothic convention of nesting reinforced by some Gothic imagery and the repeated phrase of a 'familiar gnawing flesh' written in italic to draw the eye. I was wondering why this phrase was so important and if it was a pivotal part of the plot. The basic storyline was very captivating if a little hard to follow at times. It all really started to click together for me about a quarter of the way through the book.

The addition of Ryan added an extra effect on the plot and Mercy's characterisation, making her more real/rounded if you will. Ryan is an interesting character, his past character portrayed at odds with this present demeanour. The twin bond is touched upon within the narrative. The main impression I had of Ryan was that although he appeared tough on the outside, he was soft on the inside. Making me want to crack that hard external shell.

Lots of red herrings and misdirections are placed throughout. The allusion to the adage 'never judge a book by its cover' is powerfully intertwined within the plot. Beautiful things/people may hide an ugly/nasty/evil core. I have to say that I did guess the true 'villain' of this scenario.

The biblical references were interesting with a new slant on the Horsemen of the Apocalypse and The Great Battle, adding richness to the narrative. The whole idea of Mercy being an Avenging Angel provided clarity to the plot. The parallels of having to do penance for past actions was combined with Mercy being moved from body to body. Only moving forward after she has rectified certain situations; saving that soul if you like. It reminded me of the TV show Quantum Leap (yes I know I am showing my age).

Overall I did enjoy the story when all the pieces finally fell into place. I am left with the impression that there is so much more to be revealed. Another addictive series in the making.
