Better grab this book quick whilst it is in print. I truly believe that Patrick Harpur deserves a wider audience but for the moment he is in and out of print by wonderful but obscure little publishers.I admit I am a big fan of Patrick Harpur. I was not sure how well he would do fiction. He does cram a lot of researched facts and opinons about alchemy into this book and he also develops rounded characters, raw emotion and a gripping plot. I read it on holiday and it took me most of the week to get through it as I wanted to savour it, reflect on it, be absorbed by it. No easy answers from Harpur. None needed. He asks difficult questions and attempts explorations of impossible things. I admire his courage and his lucidity. I don't always follow him and I don't ever know when to take him literally but that is, I think, his whole point - that we perceive what we are conditioned to perceive as literally true and miss out on so many deeper truths that people from other times and other cultures take for granted. Thank you Patrick and please keep writing.

I purchased this book thinking it would be a completely scientific and factual account of the alchemical process. That it was'nt is not in my view a bad thing. The alchemical process is entwined within a work of average fiction the two parts of which play off each other quite well. The theory side of things gets a little complex for my simple brain at times but the references to Jungs individuation process makes it slightly easier to understand. The book has a mysitcal, Oxbridge, west country village, mid-life crisis feel to it but is readable and informative.

I can't really add anything to Gyrus' erudite reading of this extraordinary novel-I'm simply too dense- but what a heady brew of alchemy, structural anthropology, depth psychology, natural philosophy this is,wrapped up in some beautiful prose and a tale skilfully told.Patrick Harpur is some kind of throwback to days of the great polymaths- read his other work too- remarkable!
