Book Description

18 Oct 2012
Keep it simple and do it well. The Merchant & Mills Sewing Book contains fifteen step-by-step projects aimed at guiding you gently but firmly through the basics of sewing. Each project you make from this book will be stylish, but above all, useful. Part I of the book presents a fundamental overview on the art of sewing, the tools and materials you will need and homegrown tips on essential good practice. In Part II, seasoned dressmaker Carolyn Denham leads you step by step through fifteen achievable projects, each building on the skills gained as you progress through the book. First, equip your sewing room with practical items you never knew you needed, such as a Tailor's Ham, Sleeve Roll and an Ironing Board Cover (essential items for good pressing practice), a Hussif (the ever ready portable sewing kit) and a Maker's Apron (utilitarian chic for good workers). Then go on to use your new sewing skills to make cushions, throws and bags before progressing on to garments with the Tailored Shawl and Fisherman's Top, using the paper patterns provided in the back of the book. Make them all and you will be a very capable dressmaker with a raft of functional, beautiful, handmade goods. Word count: 50,000

…a thoroughly inspiring book for beginners and competent stitchers alike --The Good Book Guide

About the Author

Carolyn Denham and Roderick Field are Merchant & Mills. They launched the company at the Hay Festival in 2010. They produce a range of cardboard patterns and ready-to-make kits and also source superb notions that they sell in stark, utilitarian packaging, standing in profound contrast to the pretty, flowery image of the average haberdasher. Carolyn has a degree in fashion and has lived and worked in Italy and New York. She spent several years in Interior Design. Roderick is an established photographer and writer with works in the National Portrait Gallery. He is currently working on a range of Merchant & Mills postcards and is in talks with Waterstone's about producing an oilskin Kindle cover. Merchant & Mills products are stocked by the Design Museum, Liberty, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Selvedge as well as independent retailers all over the UK and selected outlets in France, Japan and the US.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 15 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Words like "Timeless" and "Classic" come to mind when describing this book. The Merchant and Mills philosophy of "Keep it simple and do it well" is amply illustrated in the text and content of this book as well as in their patterns. Their advice is brilliant: it is as if they distilled all the best traditional knowledge and practice in to these pages. It would be lovely for a beginner as the patterns start with easy things to sew and become more complex. I enjoy the weight, style and feel of the actual book as much as the content. It is well illustrated and timeless - no polyester or fashion statements - just pure quality and enduring style. I love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sewing is the new black 1 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover
I'd forgotten about all the clothes I used to make and how to make them, but reading this beautiful book has reminded me how rewarding it is to spend time making things. If you're a novice, or like me you had the knowledge once upon a distant past this book gives you wonderful ideas and precise instructions. Can't wait to visit their new shop in Rye for their paper patterns and beautiful haberdashery. Then, before long I'll have an entire new wardrobe. If you are looking for a perfect Christmas present, this is it. You can't go wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pen pusher by day, pin pusher by night 27 Oct 2012
By Fieldy
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is to sewing what Brief Encounter is to railway travel! It takes you back to a nostalgic, romantic era where your senses were aroused, your imagination stimulated and your creative instincts mobilised! Back to a time when people uttered words like haberdashery and draper and when Gran or Mum would close one eye, lick the end of the cotton, and artfully thread the needle before embarking on a creative journey and emerging with a homemade garment. This is the perfect practical, yet beautifully illustrated and scripted, guide to sewing, for the modern busy individual who will value spending quality time producing a quality finished item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book 7 Nov 2012
By Mr. R. N. Lock VINE™ VOICE

I bought this beautiful book for a friend who has just starting sewing for a hobby and she thinks it's amazing - I showed it to a few other people before i parted with it who also fell in love with it too. It takes you back to when sewing was an art form and thousands of women loved to work creatively with their hands. There are great tips throughout; also the quality of the book is first class. Merchant & Mills have quality products and this book is no exception. I only wish my nan was still here to experience this wonderful book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bible 6 Nov 2012
By beccain
Format:Hardcover
Merchant & Mills have done a great job bringing sewing back. As an amateur in the sewing world i found this book incredibly easy to read, with the great images & patterns. The language used is suitable to someone who knows nothing of the sewing lingo and it's written beautifully. I couldn't recommend this book more - thankyou Merchant & Mills!

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Liked the book which I had seen at Ally Pally for £20, bought on Amazon for £10. So glad I didnt have to pay full price because patterns at back of book bit of a con and have to be enlarged to something amazing. Would have paid more for full size patterns. Other than that liked it
