Amazon.co.uk Review

If there really isn’t any such thing as bad publicity then Mercenaries 2 is already doing superbly. It certainly already has its fair share of infamy, after being denounced by the Venezuelan government as propaganda for the U.S. Army and even dragging Bono (who part owns developer Pandemic) into a row over its probity. Mind you North Korea weren’t too keen about the first game either and that turned out all right.

The reason poor Bono’s name has been dragged into the dirt is that the game’s plot revolves around a U.S. led invasion of Venezuela after a dictator takes control in a coup. It’s pretty hard to get offended about a game as gleefully silly as this though as its interests are clearly not politics but simply blowing things up as creatively as possible. As before you’re dropped into the war zone and free to ply your mercenary trade with whomever you want. However, this time you’re in charge of your own PMC (Private Military Company) and get to set up your own base and recruit your own soldiers.

Owning your own PMC gives you a lot more control over how exactly you play the game in what is essentially Grand Theft Auto in a warzone. Everything you see can be completely destroyed from innocuous shrubbery to be the biggest buildings. You can now swim as well and there’s lot more vehicles and gadgets, from helicopters to grappling hooks. With an online co-op mode as well even Hugo Chávez couldn’t fail to be entertained (maybe).

Product Description

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world.

When a power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply he sparks an invasion that turns the country into a warzone. But for you, international crisis is all upside: you are a mercenary, and you profit from chaos. Mercenaries 2 features a slew of potential clients, all willing to pay you to do their dirty work. These are world powers with deep pockets, deep grudges, and enough arms and ammo to start World War III. This is your kind of environment.

Mercenaries 2 features the latest and most dangerous in civilian and military tech, everything from shiny new sports cars, to the future-tech satellite-guided bunker-busting mini-nuke. Tanks, APCs, boats, luxury automobiles - you name it, you can have it delivered to you in real-time. And if you run out of cash you can always 'acquire' the gear you need in the field.

If you see it, you can buy it, steal it, or blow the living crap out of it. Play your own way, or play with the help of a friend in the new co-op multiplayer mode.

You are not a soldier. You don't have to play by anyone's rules. You have your own code: you will fulfil the terms of the contract, no matter what. Not everyone in the world of Mercenaries is as honourable. Everyone will try and screw you, given the chance. They think they can get away with it, but they don't know rule #1 for mercenaries: everyone pays!

  • Work for the Highest Bidder: You decide which factions to work for and when. From one-off pick-up jobs to complex multi-objective missions your choices will decide how the game progresses and which faction wins the war.
  • New Toys: Over 130 vehicles from civilian cars to tanks and choppers plus all the destructive weaponry you can handle from pistols to rocket launchers.
  • Next Gen Destruction: Take dow

Fun:
Stupidly i bought this game and how sorry i was. First thing that went wrong was during the installation where it made my DVD drive spin round like on turbo power for about 15 minutes before what i later found out was SecureROM was satisfied that it was an original game. During this time, my PC just froze, Alt+tab, Windows key... nothing was interrupting the punishment my DVD drive was taking.

I should have just aborted and took it back (i wish i had). During intallation my antivirus alterted me that a rootkit was being installed. I proceeded anyway and thought id reinstall windows afterwards.

Well after installation, i patched the game with latest patch. After setting up the settings for 1920x1200, i was dismayed to find that the game doesnt actually support it properly. instead, it seems to make all characters look tall and skinny. OK... i thought id give it a go anyway.. unfortunately i then ran into the mess of the controls... driving vehicles has some sort of retarded lag.. the targetting reticle aims by itself... theres actually so many things wrong with this game its just very badly broken and the developers have done absolutely nothing to make transform it into a title playable on the pc. After 20 torturous minutes i quit, looked online and found out not only was it garbage but it was infected with SecureROM DRM and this "game rental" approach. I would feel bad selling this to another person as a used game, so i put it straight in the bin and vowed not to buy EA games anymore.

Not only do EA believe its ok to treat me like a criminal by installing rootkits onto my pc, they also think that is acceptable to charge full price for this garbage. its about time there was some government legislation to protect consumers from this kind of reverse piracy and releasing games this broken.

Complete Reinstall of Vista was required afterwards to get rid of the rootkit it installed. AVOID this and other SecureROM DRM infected EA games like bubonic plague.

Fun:
If you're idea of fun is a few good explosions, wanton destruction and all hell breaking loose, then this game is great. It delivers well on the fire front, and very little is more fun than calling in a barrage of rocket artillery.

However, the reason for the overall three stars is because at heart, Mercenaries 2 for PC is a console port. Designed for Xbox, not a computer. This becomes apparent in ingame menu screens, where you can't click drag slider buttons to read more, and if buttons are highlighted and you click elsewhere that button will be pressed. Also, on first install, the game was beyond laggy and some of the textures got mixed up. My main character glowed green with red hair for my first hour. This was thankfully fixed by just rebooting the game.

No trouble on install, Securom hasn't yet made itself known to me, and apart from the evident port feautures it's great fun to relieve the boredom. For the price i bought it for off Amazon, it is more than worth your money for the sheer spontaneiety of it all - but don't say i didnt warn you about the driving. Some sports cars handle like tanks, and some tanks like dead hippo's.

FUN WITH FRIENDS 27 Feb 2010

Fun:
i know this game is not worth the money it cost when it came out but i got it for under 5 pound with delivery,i would have never bought this game when new as its not worth it.however at under 5 pound all in its well worth it just for the joy of blowing everything up with your friends online, its not a great game like cod or the others but its fun enough when you want a change just for a few hours or a day.

i gave 4 stars because for what i paid it makes this game more enjoyable then the full whack i saved myself from.

I'm in it for the money...
Lets blow it up is the motto of the game.

Go from A to B kill everyone there and then get paid.

Still I found it entertaining.
