5.0 out of 5 stars AN EERIE AND ELEGANT SATANIST CULT HORROR, 3 May 2009
By Dr. U. L. Khawaja "usman khawaja" (hornchurch ,london) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
this is easily one of the best psychological chiller horror about a satanist cult in modern day california who practice the demonic soul switching rituals in a wealthy chic and glamorous garb .
curt jurgens plays a great ailing pianist on death bed who makes a pact with a young struggling musician played by alan alda where they switch souls just before the old man dies naturally leaving his fortune and talent to the young man ,but alda has a wife and a child and the wife played with amazing conviction by JACQUELINE BISSET starts to suspect the bizarre new traits the husband has adopted since he inherited his new found talent ,

jacqueline bisset is easily one of the best seventies star actress from hollywood and this is the proof of the pudding, she fits the role of a complex haunted woman to perfection ,trying to make sense of the bizarre evil and protect her family from harm , and she puts everything including her soul on stakes instead of becoming a sacrificial martyr and this distinguishes her character from the black and white dull morality of the mundane horror heroines as she comes up with a surprise twist that is unforgettable in the horror genre .

the dream like atmosphere with nightmarish murders and the heightened suspense will keep you on the edge of your seats even after multiple screenings and the expressionist direction is extremely affective .
BISSET is also ravishing to look at and the angular cinematography ,art direction and set pieces are a surrealist delight befitting of salvador dali with subtle and subdued special effects ,ingeniously enhanced by some great camera work making a highly charged atmospheric thriller which works on multiple levels and dimensions,
an underrated and haunting classic ,it is adorned with some great musical pieces from LISZT on piano and the musical rendition is divine .
this has not dated even slightly as the script is nuanced and very conscious of the subterranean nature of true horror and it endeavours to keep the unfolding events at a sensible and sensitive level and pitch with subtle innuendo rather then loud frantic bangs and gore splashed on walls compared to the gory horrors of today,
a must for all serious horror occult fans as well as all admirers of miss bisset AND great musical pieces .

JACQUELINE BISSET
ALAN ALDA
CURT JURGENS
BARBARA PARKINS
