This review is from: Mental Toughness for Golf: The Minds of Winners (General Books) (Hardcover)
How many of us aspiring sports men and women invest considerable sums of our hard earned cash on the latest technological 'panacea' for our sports and find that the margin of performance improvement that it offers is just that - marginal?Well, in my opinion this book is one investment that delivers performance improvements of magnitude with little cost. It doesn't disappoint. Having been aware of some of Dr. Hemmings earlier Golf Mental Skills strategies with his 'In the Zone' programme, I found that 'Mental Toughness' took these to a whole new level. A fascinating, yet straightforward read that's written in a way that makes it even easier to relate and apply to the sport, I really enjoyed this book. You can either dip into it as and when or read it cover to cover. There are lots of specific and relevant experiences of top players used to convey the underlying message - that essentially not only acknowledges the mental aspect and challenge of the game but more usefully equips the reader with the armoury to train these to positive effect. I have to admit I've adapted some of the material for use in my management role within the workplace. I challenge you to see if you couldn't apply aspects of this read to other areas of your life too.

Despite having no experiences of playing golf, teaching golf, or working with golfers, this book is an absolute gem for all those interested psychological aspects of performance. The authors have cleverly encapsulated the individual stories of top golfers, and despite linking them with psychological theories, the book has managed to maintain a non-academic writing style. I believe the book should be a joy for all to read, as it provides insightful and honest stories of those at the very top, and portrays them as they really are - real people with real feelings and emotions. For those working in academia, the book can also be of great use. My students enjoyed greatly when I illustrated the importance of setting performance goals and focusing on your own game by reading them an excerpt from Gary Wolstenholme's experiences in taming the Tiger, or when Zane Scotland talked about using imagery at the Open Championships at Carnoustie. This book is without a doubt one of the most reader friendly sport psychology books I have ever read, and most importantly, its contents are of great interest. It will surely continue to be of frequent use for me, both professionally and personally.

This review is from: Mental Toughness for Golf: The Minds of Winners (General Books) (Hardcover)
This is a fantastic book which all levels of golfer can take something from. It is different from most golf psycology books because it is broken down in to true life short stories of succesful golfers and situations in each of their careers where psycology helped them succeed. Everyone will enjoy the Faldo and Monty stories but I particularly enjoyed reading some of the stories of the lesser known golfers and hearing in their own words how they were thinking at certain moments of triumph. Then the authors have done a great job in putting accross how each situation can help you with your own game.
