I used to use Jones's Mental Health Act Manual as an Approved Social Worker several years ago, so I am aware of his reputation and the style of his manuals. I bought this as a reference text to enable me to set up training for practitioners working with the Mental Capacity Act, and fully expect it to be extremely useful. My only gripe is that, as usual, the manuals are expensive and date so quickly.

Compared to the Mental Health Act Manual by the same author, I found this book easier to read through. It is not a rehash of the Act. It provides lots of useful explanatory notes that give a background to the sections within the Act. Also it provides some useful critique of the applicability and limitations of the Act. Content wise, this is an extremely useful book

The only drawback for me was the font size used and the spacing.

I bought this as I needed to understand the MCA as I am both working and studying the area. The manual has a lot of useful case law and also points out the many flaws in the Act. Jones has put in an amazing amount of work into this book which is shorter than his Mental Health Act manuals but still comprehensive and useable. I would recommend this to anyone working in the area of mental capacity, mental health, law, social work and more.

Important book for professionals working with people who demonstrate cognitive difficulites and lack capacity to make specific decisions including best interest issues. I like especially the informative chapter on the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, the legislative history behind it, the issues and critiques.
