Product Description

Review

We have seen some excellent progress across Key Stage 2 using the Mental Arithmetic books. Staff commented that pupils have pupils have doubled their scores in mental maths tests and that their confidence in maths is improving. --Catherine Jubbs, Headteacher

I have been using these books in school for over a decade for maths homework. They make a real difference as they provide frequent practice and improve children's mental maths skills. --J Ciuputa, Headteacher

An excellent series of books for stimulating the thought processes required for mental arithmetic/tables application - 10 minutes a day can make a real difference and the steady revision gives pupils confidence for numeracy lessons at school.

Having met my daughter's maths teacher who showed me this book to be the foundation of her teachings to all the children in Year 3 (7/8 year olds) I knew that this, together with Books 1,2,4,5 & 6, would be the ideal support for homework assistance. Until I bought this from Amazon, I had no guidelines at all and didn't know if the arithmetic I was 'teaching' at home was too hard, too easy or just plain useless. Now with this book I have the perfect assistant, because I know that the specific topics covered and the level of difficulty is exactly matched to what my daughter is studying at school, so it's an excellent revisionary tool, and it's even enjoyable too! Strongly recommended, I have no doubt that with regular use of this book at home my daughter, and her younger sister when her time comes, will have a much better chance of making the necessary grade in Year 6 and go on to our local grammar school. Sounds a bit over-the-top, but in its way, this little book can actually change the course of your children's lives - because the difference between our local grammar school and the comprehensive school is obvious for all to see. Getting a good grade at Arithmetic at age 11 is a fundamental requirement to being selected for a school offering better standards of education and in turn better opportunities in the future. I bought Books 1 through to 6 and I'm pleased I did.

I use this as part of our maths curriculum with my home-educated son. He is doing year 3-4 work buts doesn't always find maths easy so I love the way this is so clearly laid out for him. It is simple and gimmick free which I prefer.

Each page is divided into three tests, each with a slightly different emphasis. Eg. the third test is slightly more wordy with problem-solving type questions.

I also find that some maths curriculum don't progress smoothly and suddenly jump to much harder questions, making it difficult for students. This curriculum progresses slowly and steadily in level so students can improve over time.

Over-all I highly recommend this, alongside the problem-solving series, also by Schofield and Sims

Bought this book for my child in Year 4. There are three sections of ten questions per test. Slightly different types of questions. Very good practice for her to use her mental maths skills not write everything down. Perfect for that age - some easier than others - we can work out weaknesses.

Bought these I help my son with his maths as he seemed to find maths that little harder. Nice to know that I was helping him with the stuff he's suppose to be learning for his age. We don't use them every day but when it's raining and no where To go as he'd just get bored. Have gone on to buy more in the yr above.
