Book Description

1 Nov 1999 0721708005 978-0721708003 New edition
Mental Arithmetic is a highly differentiated series of graded books, proven to raise children's attainment. The series is based on ability (rather than age) so that books can be matched to the needs of each child. The books are also assessment-linked so that children can record their progress and see achievement build over time. Each book practises the 4 basic number operations, challenging children to do more complex problems involving logical thinking and application of knowledge introduced previously. Book 2 includes:
  • multiplication and division with remainders
  • time and measures
  • shapes and angles
  • compass points.

Review

We have seen some excellent progress across Key Stage 2 using the Mental Arithmetic books. Staff commented that pupils have pupils have doubled their scores in mental maths tests and that their confidence in maths is improving. --Catherine Jubbs, Headteacher

I have been using these books in school for over a decade for maths homework. They make a real difference as they provide frequent practice and improve children's mental maths skills. --J Ciuputa, Headteacher

5.0 out of 5 stars re-charging the little grey cells! 14 May 2009
Format:Paperback
An excellent series of books for stimulating the thought processes required for mental arithmetic/tables application - 10 minutes a day can make a real difference and the steady revision gives pupils confidence for numeracy lessons at school.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good 1 Mar 2011

Format:Paperback
Bought this book for my child in Year 4. There are three sections of ten questions per test. Slightly different types of questions. Very good practice for her to use her mental maths skills not write everything down. Perfect for that age - some easier than others - we can work out weaknesses.

Having met my daughter's maths teacher who showed me this book to be the foundation of her teachings to all the children in Year 3 (7/8 year olds) I knew that this, together with Books 1,2,4,5 & 6, would be the ideal support for homework assistance. Until I bought this from Amazon, I had no guidelines at all and didn't know if the arithmetic I was 'teaching' at home was too hard, too easy or just plain useless. Now with this book I have the perfect assistant, because I know that the specific topics covered and the level of difficulty is exactly matched to what my daughter is studying at school, so it's an excellent revisionary tool, and it's even enjoyable too! Strongly recommended, I have no doubt that with regular use of this book at home my daughter, and her younger sister when her time comes, will have a much better chance of making the necessary grade in Year 6 and go on to our local grammar school. Sounds a bit over-the-top, but in its way, this little book can actually change the course of your children's lives - because the difference between our local grammar school and the comprehensive school is obvious for all to see. Getting a good grade at Arithmetic at age 11 is a fundamental requirement to being selected for a school offering better standards of education and in turn better opportunities in the future. I bought Books 1 through to 6 and I'm pleased I did.
