This is a pair of CDs well worth acquiring. All the performances are first class, and the recording does not betray its age. There are other recordings of these works that are as good, though I doubt if any are better, and certainly this is a collection that will have a wide appeal, and at the price it is unbeatable.

Long and short, it's just a very good recording. There's no point reviewing the actual pieces because everyone knows they are top-class. So...if you have any doubts, ignore them because this is a good buy.

Nobody's just playing the notes on these recordings. Everything is phrased beautifully, with a perfect balance between vigor and elegance.

The digitally remastered late `60s recordings sound superb and at $8 for 2 CDs it's a must have!

I'd give this CD 3,5 stars (if that option was available). In short, the performances are good (not great in my view) and the works themselves are all brilliant compositions with the exception of Beethoven's octet (his septet which is also on this CD is a wonderful masterpiece).

I am entirely satisfied, however, with the sound quality on this set. It is by no means poor but the accoustics are a bit thin for my taste. Having said that, the violins never sound scratchy despite this and each group of instruments is easily recognisable (the sound is clear enough, just not rich enough).

One certainly gets what one is paying for: very satisfactory performances of great works in a clear, albeit not rich, sound.

These are fairly enjoyable pieces. The Mendelssohn and Schubert Octets are especially good. The Beethoven works are enjoyable, but not what I would consider brilliant. They are classical works, not as romantic as the Schubert and Mendelsssohn. The Mendelssohn Octet is quite good, especially the first and third movements. The sound, while maybe not the highest quality, is good. Recommended to anyone who loves classical chamber music.
