This is a very enjoyable work, and one which should be performed more.If you know Mendelssohn's "Elijah" you will enjoy "Paulus".This performance is in German, and I do remember hearing "St.Paul" sung in English on an older recording, which also was enjoyable.after hearing this recording it reminds me what a great composer Mendelssohn was.. I recomend that you hear Symphony No 2 "Hymn of Praise" this is a very great work for soloists choir and orchestra.(a good recording is the L.S.O.Abbado.)

Neglected Mendelssohn? 12 Feb 2010
By Alan Craig - Published on Amazon.com
Frankly I am a little bit puzzeled. Here we have one of Mendelssohn's best choral works in a recording from Chandos

with some great soloists and The BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales under the late Richard Hickox. This

oratoiro tells in part the story of events in the life of St. Paul. The Overture is some of the composers best work.

the opening chorus reminds me of parts of Mendelssohn's Second Symphony. On the whole the performance is excellent.

This work like his "Elijah" or "Elias" oratorio is a beautiful but seemingly neglected work. neither deserves such a

fate. I'm glad that Chandos reissued this recording in midprice, it helps make this a first choice of this work.

Highly Recommended!

Outstanding Perofrmance 11 Aug 2010
By Leon B. Albert - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This "not-so-familiar" work of Felix Mendelssohn's is professionaly recorded and professionally executed. The only unfortunate thing about it is in German and not English. However, the booklet does have the translation. A difficult score for the tenor, Barry Banks as Paul, is outstanding. If bel canto is your still of listening then you should have this CD in your collection. It's on the Chandos label and it imported from England.
